I have been looking around for a few weeks for a decent 2 stroke learner bike or moped to help me get back into biking, but am staggered that there doesn't seem to be all that much around, especially in my area.

I was after either a DT50, TS50, TZR125, RD125LC or something similar, but bikes are either miles away or ludicrously expensive.

Where are all of the old school bikes, have they been scrapped or all they all rotting in barns?

I had a couple of 125's a few years ago and there seemed to be many more about then.

The idea of a 4 stroke or scooter doesn't do it for me, at least in these small engine sizes.

I know what you mean but I guess the 90's are way in past now!! I'm after a TS50 to restore for my lad when he's 16, its a few years off yet (5) but as I only want to pay a few hundred quid it'll likely need plenty of work.

I had a TS at 16 in 94 it was on a K plate and one of the models with the blue frame and gold wheels.

On ebay there are quite a few old skool 2 strokes about, I was looking at a couple of RG125fun's yesterday with I'm tempted by but can't really afford the garage space.
Couple of nice AR's on there too at the mo. I was never a DT fan so not sure about those but I'd imagine there are more about as they were very very popular (common!)

Good luck with your search.

NSR125. The only real option now. All others are expensive, scrapped, crashed or non runners.

There are a few TS50's about, but all seem to be miles from me. I did look at one last weekend, but the seller wanted too much for it considering it needed plenty of work doing.

I wouldn't mind a project for the winter, a couple of years ago I restored a pair of RD125LC's both of which I sold to fund a car.

I had a DT50 many years ago when I was 16, so would like to relive my youth a bit, plus now I have a car licence I wouldn't need a CBT for that.

Yes there are plenty of later models about, later 90's and 2000's but to me they went a bit bland later on, not as nice paint and no gold wheels!. Plus the ped boys have had hold of them.

Late 80's early 90's bikes are getting rare now and thats what I'm after. If possible a K reg x model like I had in my youth.
Thumbs Up

My 3rd bike and first after mopeds was an RXS100 and it was a great little bike, however the brakes were not the best and the 6v electrics drove me mad. It also struggled up hills compared to a restricted 125.

I would consider one, but it would have to be cheap.

The real answer is all us baby boomers bought all the decent ones, and are now in the process of restoring them, so we can enjoy our mid life crisis', and relive our misspent "yoofhood".

Once we've spent many hours and mucho moolah tarting them up, we'll ride them a few hundred miles then wrap them up in cotton wool and leave them in our centrally heated garages.
We then don our pipe and slippers and simply wait for our assets to appreciate.

Better than a pension really! Laughing

Id say that that appiles to pretty much everything classic and 2stroke now irrespective of engine size. there's a few bikes that can be had for reasonable money as they were not as popular when new, or highly thought of etc, or bikes that were very rare and so no one knows about them (Gilera Freestyle 125etc).

The pre-82 125's are very sought after and expensive now, as are most sporty and off road 1980's liquid cooled machines, as this was when they were under constant development and the manufacturers were competing for oneupmanship.

The mid-late 90's last of the two strokes are pretty hard to find, and expensive now too. RGV/NSR/TZR250's etc from this era are very pricey now for what they are.

you can probably pick up european 2stroke bikes a bit cheaper if you can find them though, as first time round nearly most people had one of the Japanese 125's, and so more people are looking for say an RD125LC than there are people looking for early Aprilia/Cagiva/Gilera 125 road bikes. It's the same with the trial versions too, most people had a DT/MTX/KMX TS etc, but i bet there's very few people searching for a Cagiva W8, or Gilera or Fantic 125 traile to re-live old memories.

My second bike... still got it... in nowhere near as good a shape as this now. Had it for 18 months, got some abuse and ate pistons.

When I taught CBT's, I had a fleet of 6 GP100 Suzukis. I closed the school down and gave them all away on a first come first served basis.

They were only 18 months old with less than 3,000 miles on the clock, and I still had a couple of people who wanted me to pay for new indicator lenses or pay for them to get rid of the few dents and scratches, even though it cost them nothing for the bike Rolling Eyes

Suffice to say, I gave them to people who were not bothered by a few little knocks and scrapes as they all ran perfectly and were all 100% legal.

Wonder where they are now 11 + years on or so?

One thing that does annoy me a bit is that around 2 years ago my dad sold an RD125DX twin, in very good condition, good chrome etc and he struggled to sell it. I think he ended up getting around £500 for it.

I bet it would be worth twice that now, at least and I am sure he wished he had kept it.

Same with my last RD125LC, it was restored by me to a pretty good standard and I got £700 for it in 2005. I see similar ones fetching £1500 upwards now.

They died with old reg's and got replaced as new 'eco-freindly' stuff got imported to suit said new regs.

Surprises me there aren't more of the old school tiddler strokers about, considering how cheap to run and easy to fix they are. Spares are still largely plentiful for most of them. That fact that places like Wemoto and Yambits keep such a wide stock suggests there are still a good few out there - but you don't see many these days.

Over the past two or three years I've started having lots of people come up to me and talk about the old RXS, so it looks like interest in small and ancient shitters is picking up Laughing

It's an F-reg. Not sure what year that makes it. I was planning to rebuild it etc but I don't think I'll ever have the money, going to sell it at some point I think.
