I try not to post too much on this board but I'm needing some help with this one.

The CG (6V model) has been standing for a month and a half as I've been cleaning and lining the tank. I also took the opportunity to clean the carbs and lube the chain. (Plus a few other cosmetic things).

The bike ran well before (apart from the carb clogging with rust from the tank Razz ) started fine as I'd put new points in it at the end of last year. But now it's not starting and doesn't seem to spark (Held the plug against the engine and turned it over, didn't see or hear a spark).

Does anyone know what could have deteriorated within that month? The engine hasn't been touched and it's been kept under a cover outside, the battery is most likely flat but it should start without one.

CG's can start without a battery from what I remember though.

Can anyone confirm this?

I'm assuming it is kickstart? The GS I had use to be a pain to start unless the battery had 'some' charge. I think the neutral light drained whatever the generator kicked out Laughing

Is it possible that you may of dislodged a wire to or from the coil when you moved the tank?

Charging the battery may help then, I'll look into that.

It's possibly I knocked a wire loose as well, hadn't thought of that. Thumbs Up

My 12V CDI CG will start with the battery disconnected so i would assume the points version wouldn't need a battery either.

Start with the very basics first.

- Check that the points are still in spec...
- Check the frame earth points with a multimeter.
- Check the wires from the alternator where they connect to the wiring loom.
- Check for signs of damage to the HT lead.
- Remove the spark plug cap from the HT lead, trim the lead down a tiny bit and reconnect the cap.
- Check the condenser/ignition coil with a multimeter and check if the values are correct (they are listed in the Haynes)

Points couldn't have worn that quickly could they? Was starting fine when I started cleaning the tank and the engine case has been on the whole time.

Earth seems okay, not sure I checked it right though.

Just trimmed the lead down a bit, probably helped since the connection did look knackered but it's still not sparking.

Checked coil and condenser, they're fine from what I can tell. But I was having trouble getting a steady reading from the condenser.

Have you checked that fuel is flowing? I only say that because you say you did some work on th tank.

Charge the battery.

How many times. Do the simple things first. An HT lead is not going to corrode to the point of failure in 12 weeks, a battery may lose enough charge to be useless in that time.

Some bikes will run without a battery, some will not - depends on whether or not the ignition is self-exciting. I think that it is on some models of CG, and not on others.

If the battery is fine, look for corrosion on the big thingy mounted under the yokes. Can't remember what it's called or what it does, but I know that it can cause problems on some models of CG.
