Hi fellars, i seem to recall from somewhere that indicators that flash to quickly are an MOT fail.

I bought some cheap chinese LED indicators and fitted them, they work (was quite suprised tbh) but they flash too quickly. can anyone recommend a solution to this problem as i have a MOT coming up.

You need a solid state flasher relay. To pass the MOT your indicators must flash at a rate of between once a second and once in two seconds.

Indicator flash rate needs to be between 60 and 120 times per minute (sorry pete, it needs to be faster than once every two seconds)

Between once and twice a second.

Pete might have known what he meant and put it wrong.

ahh thanks, sorry i didn't think to search. So i need a new relay. Is the relay normally under the seat area?

Also, as i have filament bulbs on the front, and LEDs on the back, would fitting an LED relay mean the front indicators would flash too slow?

You need to do a search as I'm sure the information is there.

IIRC the relay switch is for a full LED system. For a mixed system, again from memory, you keep the original filament flasher and fit resistors in-line with your LED indicators to trick them to flash at the correct rate. I think a search will tell you what values to get for the additional electric bits.

Basically your flasher unit will be rated for a certain wattage. The filament indicator bulbs will be rated at that wattage. The LED ones will not be. So the resistors pull up the wattage to trick the electrics to work. Be careful though as the resistors will get hot.

Hope that's as clear as mud.

Maybe this is useful - from this thread...

Just solder on some inline resistors (ebay) and youre done

Buy a constant rate Flasher unit, more expensive but better than doing the above, uses less power and you wont have to hack your the wires up and create another point for it to fail. It is also simpler as it just required replacing the unit it took me about a minute to do on my bike.

As said, do a search and some investigation.
Then you can decide on costs, ease of fitting, etc,

HTH Thumbs Up

A digital relay (commonly called an "electronic flasher relay") should flash at a predetermined rate, no matter what load is on it, so front filaments and rear LED would be fine.
