dont know much about boots but generally anything gore tex is good i have some army issue bottoms and jacket that i wear and they are awesome, i would however if i was buying boots again coat them in dubbing now n again because theres always a chance of water getting through stitching on any boot/jacket/trousers. dubbing can be bought from most camping shops as you may well know and is good stuff
might not help just like to get my 2 penneth in where i can lol

With the advent of Goretex it seems everyone has forgotten how to make boots waterproof. Go to Millets or any of the outdoor stores and buy any one of a number of waterproofing waxes to put on the boots, apply once a week and you will have waterproof boots - guaranteed if they are leather - even cheap ones.

Goretex is good but it can and does split in the boot causing leaks. If that happens and the boots are otherwise in good condition just revert to the wax treatment. Unless of course you have loads of dosh to splash about Smile

I've just checked mine as i was sure they were just bog-standard hein gerike ones. . . .they're not, they're Frank Thomas Aqua ones. I feel bad now as i posted in a different thread some time ago telling someone how good gerike boots were Embarassed

They weren't too pricey and have been properly waterproof for a good few years. They've been sat unused while the bike's been off the road but on the rare occasions where i've used them as a warmer alternative to wellie boots for tramping about in they've still been waterproof Thumbs Up

I wear these (but other brand badged, they're generic and badged as allsorts)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Blytz-T3-Short-Motorcycle-Boots/dp/B006T095TC/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_9

Can be had for much less than that but that's the first link i could be bothered finding.

Does me fine all the way from sunderland to manchester in the rain without wet feet

I bought Hein Gericke Bullson Solid "waterproof" boots last year for £90 - they're rubbish.

Never particularly waterproof from the get-go. A recent trip to Scotland was the last straw and I took them back for repair.

9 weeks later I still don't have my boots back and no word when they'll get here, so terrible customer service from HG.

Given that both boots leaked (badly) I'd say the manufacturing was very poor and this will affect other boots of the same type.

Now wearing BMW Santiagos (£255 - eek) and they're flawless. BMW also do a more basic boot that looks nicely made called the AllRound but it's still dear at £150. Hein Gericke will be getting much less of my money in future thanks to cr*p aftersales.

Goretex lined army surplus boots. Cheap, long lasting, fine on and off the bike. Mine have been tested sloshing through Highland peat bogs in lashing torrential downpours.

+1 to dubbin although TBH I just keep mine well polished because I am a homofag tart dapper.

Failing that, SealSkinz waterproof socks, although they do get cold if they get soaked on the outside.

After my Prexports finally died, I bought a pair of Alpinestars Ridge Boots when they were on sale (think I paid £90) :-

https://www.onyerbike.net/clothing/Boots/Alpinestars/Alpinestars_Ridge_Waterproof_Boots

Comfy enough to wear around the office all day and completely waterproof so far, but I've only had them 3 months so can't comment on long term waterproofnessitude.

Waterproof socks / gortex socks...they last forever, they fit inside all boots (so interchangeable), don't cost the earth, are washable, AND fairly cheap. Also perfect at walking about in wet grass when camping...keep the foot perfectly dry. Thumbs Up

No boots will be totally waterproof (except wellys) after months of daily use, in addition to a pair of ecent boots try using a pair of goretex liners (plenty of army suplus on flea bay) not expensive £5-6

I returned the very same pair after 4 months too with a broken zip to streetbike. iked up a set of dioras for 5 quid less and apart from the logo coming off the back so far so good. I used to swear by spada as they were cheap and good quality. Now i think they are just cheap...

I bought some Bullson boots from Hein Gericke a short while back.
They've performed very well in the recent bad weather to and from work so far. Thumbs Up

I've had my RST Raptors for about 7 months now and they've fared pretty well.

No noticeable leaking and I've ridden through monsoon-type downpours quite often. Laughing

Just bought some Nikwax leather waterproofing wax to sustain the waterproof-abilty.

Interesting as i also bought Spada boots about 2-3 months ago, and they've started to leak something awful through the left boot and a little on the right boot. I'm thinking of taking them back, but it's yet another item i'm returning to the same shop for not remaining waterproof and i can imagine they'll start getting funny about it sooner or later... Confused

I mean, is it unreasonable to expect bike gear to last a full 12 months (i.e. its usual warranty period) of regular commuter-style use without losing its waterproofing capability if not treated with other waterproofing products?
It's just that i figure if these things don't last longer than a few months, i doubt they'd last for years even with dubbin or whatever added..?

I do this. Works well. IIRC the likes of Aldi/Lidl sometimes include them when they do their bike deals. Worth looking out for.

Goretex liners?

Pah, if you're a cheapskate a couple of *supermarket of choice* carrier bags will do the trick.....

But going back to the point. When I ride in the rain I wear hiking boots rather than bike boots (Brasher ones) and I've never had a problem as long as the boots are inside my trousers.

You might be better off spending a tad more and getting a decent pair of waterproof boots, e.g Spent 90 on your Spada ones, another 40 or whatever on these ones, supposing they are no good!

I've heard good things about Sidi black rains too Thumbs Up

I have Sidi Black Rain's, never let any water through in the 3 years I've been using them, I also have a cheap pair of akito boots, there ok in showers to medium downpour but do let the water in if you get caught out in a proper downpour. Bottom line is you get what you pay for I think, I've heard good things about TCX boots but have no first hand knowledge of them.
