This is a pretty good one:

It's been hypothesised that people dress the entity they meet in 'clothes' that best suit their beliefs and what they expect/want to see. ____________________ "There's the horizon! Ride hard, ride fast and cut down all who stand in your way!" |

Ain't no way I'm getting into another discussion about this
I'll watch that though.
In return, have a read of this...
https://www.ukskeptics.com/the-dying-brain.php
Lot of very interesting points in there...it's a bit of a heavier read than the believer website stuff but meets the points rather well.
I've been reading up a bit on NDEs after our discussion so I have some points to think about:-
a) If the consciousness lives on after death, why doesn't everyone have an NDE? Only 18% report it, which seems more inline with the cause being a series of neurological factors which may or may not always occur according to the manner of death, particularly the level or speed of anoxia.
b) People who have nearly died or believe themselves to have died but never actually done so report NDEs. This seems a MAJOR point against these being evidence of life after death.
c) EEG readings are not a reliable measure of cessation of brain activity as it has been shown that they only pick up surface signals. Therefore reports of people hearing things after brain death are not necessarily accurate (although actually it has never been confirmed that NDEs have happened after death).
d) Every single feature of NDEs can be replicated in a living person by meddling with the noggin and some are routinely reported. e.g. Anoxia can create the sensation of passing through a tunnel, as reported by pilots under high G. You can induce NDEs with the correct drugs or by stimulating the right parts of the brain.
e) If NDEs are actually happening after brain activity ceases, how is the brain forming memories of them?
I have been waiting with interest for the results of Sam Parnia's study to confirm OBEs are real by placing pictures on platforms above operating tables to see if people can identify them following on OBE with the right viewpoint. He was meant to have already published last year but is dragging his heels (rumour has it he has had no hits so is continuing until he does presumably).
I discovered however that this has already been done quite a few times before and whilst people have reported OBEs during the trials, there have been no hits on the images (or numbers or words...the method varies). These trials have on the whole been carried out by believers in OBEs so they have the "correct" bias but they certainly don't seem very keen on publishing the negative results which is why you might not know about them from the NDE websites. ____________________ ZX6R + CBR600RR

My god...I'm watching that programme now. Only half way through but what a disingenuous, pseudoscientific bit of quality entertainment it is...no wonder people believe this stuff with the soothing authoritative voice of Morgan Freeman assuring us
So far I've enjoyed the bit where they entirely dismiss the similarity of anoxic effects in pilots to NDEs on the basis that, yeah they may see bright lights, head through tunnels and have out of body experiences but they don't see their relatives so it's totally different I would say that was worryingly similar, rather than different.
Took me about 5 seconds to explain why that might be too...pilot at work, having fun in the G machine or man on an operating table facing death...which one is more likely to be thinking about his wife and kids at that moment
I'm loving the microtubules bit too...got some thoughts on that but I'll wait until the end to see if they cover any of them. I do like the way they present it as having some basis though, rather than just being a very interesting hypothesis with one absolutely fundamental failing...oddly one not mentioned by that programme as yet and I strongly suspect it won't be by the end either ____________________ ZX6R + CBR600RR |

"The nature of the claim being made by the survivalists should not be underestimated. If true, it would require a truly radical revision of current neuroscience and the known laws of physics. To support such a radical view one would ideally require radical evidence of high quality."
Something like quantum-entanglement maybe? ____________________ "There's the horizon! Ride hard, ride fast and cut down all who stand in your way!" |

Hetzer, I asked you to explain this in the other thread repeatedly and you still haven't replied.
If you have some viable reasoning, do feel free to share, but you are rapidly losing my respect for (as far as I can tell) consistently misusing scientific nomenclature. |
You didn't watch it properly/at all either then?
The quantum entanglement theory, as applied to after-death continuation of the consciousness, suggests that information can exist in separate locations simultaneously and independently (as any theoretical physicist will tell you, and experiments support the idea). Research into the brain, according to the program, has found structures that indicate the brain is a quantum computer and maybe the information in it is replicated 'out there in the universe', meaning that when the human body dies the information that constitutes the conciousness carries on existing in it's other quantum-entanglement location.
My only reservation is that it implies a need for the universe, when many NDEs report the consciousness leaving the universe. But that's hardly suprising as physicists are barely into quantum-entanglement, much less whatever's beyond that.
It's not just "weirdness" Tommy, there are connections that are becoming clearer and making more sense that appear to offer a connecting of the dots across the boundaries of various mysteries. Telepathy is just one other example of something that could be explained by quantum-entanglement. After all, the universe and every single atom of which it's comprised is nothing more than one huge energy-field. And if all those atoms are connected in more than a simple linear fashion, as entanglement theory suggests, it really does blow the cap off our current concept of reality. ____________________ "There's the horizon! I would suggest that you may have watched it properly but you didn't bother to look into any of it.
I don't want to wind you up and get into another row but this is exactly the problem with getting your information from the entertainment media.
The idea that the brain works as a quantum computer is just an idea...there are no structures that "indicate" this to be the case. The idea came about through computational theory, nothing to do with the anatomy of the brain.
In addition there is a major criticism of the theory (obviously overlooked during Morgan Freeman's studies) in as much as it has been shown that neurons fire 1,000 times slower than the quantum decoherence time. In other words, the brain doesn't operate at the right speed to be using quantum gravity effects...but then you must know all this Hetzer as you must surely look closely at all the evidence you put forward There are numerous other criticisms of this theory out there too but it's still an interesting idea...although perhaps without meaning as much as you might think.
Even if the brain did work as a quantum computer that still doesn't mean it is communicating with the rest of the universe...that's a hell of a leap of logic. Besides, this doesn't add weight to the idea of consciousness existing after death if the basis of it is quantum effects during brain activity. ____________________ ZX6R + CBR600RR |

Well there you go; you're talking about neurons when the research has already gone much finer than that and is looking a far smaller structures within the brain.
We already know the primary differences between us Tommy. I'm very much of an intuitive nature, you are dogmatically empiricist. For me empirical proof is just a nice cap on the bottle, for you it's the entire bottle. To put it another way, and this is not to wind you up or be offensive...I'm standing in a field looking at a woods, you're right in the woods looking at the trees. You're an expert on the nuts and bolts of the machine, I see the machine without knowing much about its nuts and bolts. I have enough of an idea about them to have a rudimentary grasp of how they work, you have enough of an idea about the machine to have a rudimentary idea of what it looks like.
Which is why we can both watch the same program and come away with entirely different ideas and conclusions from it. Vive la difference, ay? ____________________ "There's the horizon! Ride hard, ride fast and cut down all who stand in your way!" |

Because you watch it and take it at face value, whilst I watch it and have at least a cursory glance over the theories mentioned.
If you get your information from entertainment shows and websites, it's no wonder you believe in all this stuff so ferociously...it's just sensationalist rubbish Hetzer, surely you know that? |
There you go, starting up the offensiveness again.
You assume I take something at face value, you assume that I never do background research or delve into stuff at a deeper level. You assume. I've read Steven Hawking's 'A Brief History of Time', if that's any possible indication to you of how far I've gone into trying to understand stuff like this. I probably don't assimilate data like you, in as much that I don't commit all the fine detail to memory, I absorb a kind of global overview from everything I read.
When it comes to the crunch I believe my strategy, if it can be called that, will prove more beneficial than yours. I prefer to be out in the field looking at the woods, and happy enough to know that I have a good enough idea of what individual trees look like to not need to be standing right next to one. But if I do happen to need a close-up of one I can whip out my binoculars.
You, on the other hand, don't have a similar means of getting out from amongst the trees and seeing the woods as a whole. Unless you'd be prepared to physically remove yourself and take a walk into the field. But your dogmatism has rendered you a cripple pretty much. Your legs aren't up for it.
That's as objective an analysis of your way of thinking I can come up with, not meant to wind you up or be offensive. ____________________ "There's the horizon! Ride hard, ride fast and cut down all who stand in your way!" |
