Can I re-register my bike that has no vin?

Hi, I've got a 1982 DT 125LC that is currently a project. However I'm 16 and would like to get it road legal for when I'm 17 but the vin number has been taken off and has no V5. What can I do to re register this bike? The guy I bought it from said it was stolen and recovered. As you can probably tell I'm new to bikes and know little about them, any help would be great.

You will have a tough job convincing the DVLA that the frame is legit and not something that has been replaced

This URL , a PDF document, shows information about registering vehicles with no VIN numbers. You will have to go to your local DVLA office and have it inspected, and show receipts of all parts you buy for it to prove you didn't just nick it. The DVLA will not register it without it being stamped with a VIN.

Again, with no documentation, you're going to have a hard time, but I'm sure it's not impossible

I can be done, but time wise and money wise and hassle factor and i would not be surprised if it was issued with a Q plate at the end which some insurers do not like,

you are best off getting a frame with V5, life will be alot easier

Is it just missing the VIN plate or has the stamped number been ground/filed away ?

Is the engine number visible?

Stolen/recovered bikes without any form of ID are NEVER released by the Police until some form of ID has been re-stamped. Usually, they are crushed unless the owner/insurer can be identified forensically.

If you come across any vehicle without a stamped number you can only be 99% certain it has been stolen, you can however, be 100% certain that it has not yet been 'recovered'.

Thanks for all the reply's. I had a better look today and it seems that the frame number hasn't been filed off, instead it's been covered by the powder coat, still unreadable though. I'll see If I can get a better look tomorrow.

Sand it back slightly - it should leave the numbers standing out...

Right, had a look and the engine number has been fully filed off and the frame number is unreadable. Guess it'll have to stay as a field bike .
