Hi all

I recently purchased a private bike and didn't notice before handing over the cash that the bike has 'For race use only' stamped on one of the twin exhausts.

The guy selling the bike didn't mention it, but he did say he removed the Termignoni stickers because he doesn't like stickers. Rolling Eyes

Contacted the seller with a view to getting some of the cash I paid on top of my bike back but was wondering how much of an issue having a not for road use exhaust is? I see I can cover the engraving up to get it past MOT but that's not going to wash with the old bill, my insurance company or a dealer (when it's time to sell) is it?

Right, you only need to tape it over with insulation tape for the MOT. Mine has the same thing, passed fine.

Well to be fair you could grind it off if you really wanted to. I've never been pulled for a completely gutted end can. Absolutely no metal baffle, and no insulation crud in their either... And my ZZR has a 4inch gash at the bend on the downpipe and currently sounds like a v8. I've yet to be pulled. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Heh, OK cheers.

Did any dealers get pissy about it? Stick it to you over the exchange value?

Thanks

IIRC the MOT testing guidelines changes a bit back and it's now the examiner who decides if an exhaust is too loud rather than just a stamp on the can.

I'm sure someone will be alone to either verify or refute that, such is the internet Thumbs Up

However, I think you will have problems with a "not for road use" on the can - see here - from Dec. 2009
MCN wrote:
The MoT requirements in respect of exhaust markings did change a couple of years ago, when the requirement for BS or EU-marking on the exhaust silencer was removed.

The tester is required to check the exhaust for security, deterioration and completeness, and with the engine running they will assess the silencer's effectiveness in reducing as far as is reasonable the noise emitted.

If the MoT Inspector then thinks the condition or type of exhaust is such that the noise emitted is clearly in excess of a standard silencer in average condition, or he finds some unacceptable markings such as track use only or not for road use, then the bike will fail.

If you wish to appeal against a refusal to issue a test certificate, then you should ask the tester for an appeal form (VT17) which you would send to the local VOSA office with the required fee no later than 14 working days after the test.

Plus there is this MOT UK site that says...
MOT UK wrote:
EXHAUST SYSTEM

The decibel level will be assessed at the discretion of the tester, other checks are:

Arrow The exhaust mountings must be secure and not fouling any part of the rear suspension
Arrow The exhaust must not be holed and free from leaks from both joints and box(es)
Arrow Replacements units, other than bikes registered before 01.Jan.1985, must have the BSAU 193 stamp

So Thinking

Personally I'd just remove the not for road use stamp. It then falls under MOT examiners discretion as no markings given the above. If a policeman asks then it has an MOT so must be acceptable, no? Confused As for insurance if it has no markings how dis you know?

Thumbs Up

I've never had an MOT tester arsey enough to complain about anything that isn't dangerous or obvious. (although all my bikes have always flown through MOTs) If it's not preposterously loud they shouldn't complain. I'd probably tape or sticker over the ILLEGAL AS FUCK markings though.

A copper probably won't think about it having been covered up and there's a tiny possibility of a copper even looking that closely at it tbh. As long as you're not riding about on a ratty deathtrap.

What a fanny Laughing Laughing I can just imagine the email demanding your money back over the stupidest of reasons. A lot of after market cans aren't legal, if you don't like them you shouldn't have bought the bike.

If you really are that worried then sell the aftermarket cans and buy some standard ones back, you'd probably make money Thinking

I got pulled the other night on the ZRX, they didn't say anything at all about the obviously not legal Kerker exhaust (which is probably what grabbed their attention roaring along with the front wheel off the ground!) only mentioning the front tyre being slightly worn on one side and giving me a lecture on what to wear when 'riding like an idiot'...
I think louder pipes are so commonplace on bikes it isn't such an issue.

Or, Save 50p - https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190696696219

I had one of those on my SV "Not for road-use" exhaust, although removed the exhaust as it sounded pants.

Do you know anything about the current state of motorcycling in the UK?

The seller will laugh, and so will we. A good 80% of bikes have illegal exhausts I reckon. No one will bat an eyelid, especially not the seller/dealer.

Getting some cash back wasn't just about the exhaust, there was some nice hidden fixes that weren't obvious when I inspected the bike but no need to go into that in this thread.

Good to know. cheers!

Don't get me wrong. The bike sounds awesome and rides great.

I was drunk last night, so wasn't able to elaborate on my 'lol'.

My drz 400e supermoto had 'not for highway use' stamped on the frame. A hastily applied piece of tape before the mot and never had an issue.

I believe the exhaust on my CRF450R is stamped not for road use and possibly/probably the one on my Husaberg. Ive put my Honda through three MOTs and Husaberg one. The only thing I get each time is an advisory that theyre too loud.
