PostPosted: 20:04 - 02 Jul 2012    Post subject: Forklift training - Job centre grant? Reply with quote

Hi,

I am currently an agency worker for DHL. However, I am not earning enough money as I am not guaranteed any hours and I often get paid pennies.

However, DHL will use agency workers as forklift drivers (mainly reach drivers), but they will not train the agency workers themselves, just the full time ones.

Somebody at the warehouse said that If I can prove that I am not earning enough money to the Job centre they will pay for/subsidise the course training. Does anybody know of any schemes or if this is true? I can't afford to pay for it by myself and I don't fancy taking out a loan

Thanks

JC won't, you need to get in contact with your local "Babcock Enterprise" office (or similar) and see what they can offer, they get funding from some governmental pot but it's worth a chat with them to see if you have any options. Thumbs Up

My other half forked out and paid for his 16 tonne himself a few years ago and has never been out of work since. Money used to be quite good but obviously workers coming in who will accept less have screwed the pay levels of late. Sometimes you just have to decide how much you want something, we got the money together to pay for the course and have never regretted it, especially now as he is no longer agency and the company pays for the renewal.

Yes. Occasionally they run them, but not in the sense you are talking AFAIK - More for the long time unemployed

When I was on the dole for a few months they had 2 courses, one for forklift training and one for door supervision, I did the door supervision course, they were both free.

They were hosted by Apricot training
Call the job centre and speak to an advisor

I'm getting a loan from my Nan. Hopefully that will open a lot of doors for work, lots of jobs going but always asking for FLT certificates Evil or Very Mad

to be honest, the job center would have said no anyway, they dont do the forklift courses anymore. i did work as a laborer and asked about this and they're response was "we dont do it as funding got cut" which sounds about right.

im just hoping having my CBT will open up work avenues as i wont have to rely on stupid public transport anymore lol.

Sucks, don't it? I don't earn enough money to start paying for my own training. I should be booking my course, which covers both reach and counterbalance, for £495 Thumbs Up

I'm not taking it with them. My friend recommended ARC, a company based outside King's Lynn.

They do the course for £495, but after July is goes up by a hundred quid as they are on a promotion at the moment.

You can claim tax relief on that. I know it's only a small amount but you can get £99 back off the taxman.

Ring the tax office on 0845 300 0627, have your NI number handy and if possible your employers reference number (the agency should be able to give you this if you ask them)

Ask for form P810. Thumbs Up

Well after being on hold for 40 minutes, they say the P180 form is all to do with social security benefit and not tax relief?

JSA is crazy. When I was working offshore through an agency I was told to call up whenI got home and enter a claim. Two weeks later when due to go offshore again just to let them know. So every fortnight I had to sign on/off even though I saw it as my downtime because they wouldnt be able to backdate if the job fell through.

Well an extra 200 quid a month to me, for feck all.

Whoops! Back on the phone tomorrow! Embarassed

Could I actually get help with this? I'm paying for this on my own - e.g. no help from the employer at all

If the client pays a higher hourly rate for flt drivers than general warehouse ops and the work is fairly long-term it's worth approaching the agency and asking if they will contribute.

Some will, some won't. They are unlikely to cover the whole cost but they may make a contribution. If they do, expect to sign a contract agreeing to pay them back if you leave before a certain amount of time has passed.

They may agree to pay for the course upfront and take the cost back out of your wages in small weekly instalments (with the whole remaining cost becoming payable if you leave), especially if they have any links to a local training outfit.

All agencies operate differently, most are absolute sharks and will shaft you (and the client) at every available opportunity, but every now and again you will come across a decent one who actually care about the temps that work for them (who are, after all, what pays the agency's bill!) and are willing to help you out.

Can't hurt to ask. Smile

This is where it gets difficult

The agency workers get paid less than the full time DHL workers. ALL the FLT drivers get paid the same as the other DHL workers, but again, If I do pay for my own course and they stick me in a reach truck my pay will not budge.

It just opens doors for me to work closer to home, all warehouse jobs in Peterborough ask for FLT Crying or Very sad

They can only do that for 13 weeks, how long have you been there?

The law changed in October last year, it's called the Agency Workers Regulations. They have to offer you the same pay and working conditions after the 13-week period.

They can (and probably will) finish your contract at 13 weeks. If they do, expect a phone call offering you more work (in the same place, on the same shit rate) after a further 8 weeks......

Fuck me how old is this thread you dug up?

Anyone can do a forklift course for free. Both reach and counterbalance. Simply commit a crime and get community service. If you get 100 hours or more you will have enough to write-off 20% on a fully paid course.

Free forklift course here we come.
