Hi.

Don't have a clue what I'm looking for, but would prefer petrol, I think, although all the petrol stoves I've found seem to be bloody expensive.

It's got to be fairly small and light, and not cost the earth.

Thanks

The quality ones like Primus and Dragonfly are hideously expensive but Coleman do a dual fuel for about £70

Any reason you want petrol? If you want lightweight then I used a Pocket Rocket stove on a small 100g cartridge for years in the Military.

I have the MSR "pocket rocket" Costs about £20, and is great. It uses the small gas canisters though, not petrol, which are a little cumbersome, but last me for ages.

For a REALLY cheap, easy stove, Google 'Pepsi can stove' Its basically the bottoms of 2 drinks cans slid on top of one another, with some holes punched in it. I made one - runs on methylated spirit (Possibly petrol too?) and works surprisingly well for something home made. Pretty efficient and certainly enough to boil water etc with.

That looks ok. Will it still work at high altitude, being gas?

Based on what I use the old fashioned Trangia does the job.
Can be argued a little bulky but you have all your pans in that bundle.
Uses meths although you can get gas kits for some.
They also do multi-fuel (inc. petrol) but I think that's for extreme (sub-zero, high altitude, etc.). Plus it's expensive.

Thumbs Up

The coleman dual fuel ones are good and run on petrol but they are a bit bulky.

I have a Borde Bomb petrol stove which is very efficient and compact BUT it's a bit of a specialist piece of kit and they are VERY difficult to come by. I eventually got mine from a specialist walking shop in Germany after having wanted one for a few years. They are over £100 and there's a bit of a knack to using them but I successfully cooked on one for my whole 3 month tour of Britain a few years back.

Google: Borde Kocher

I've got a mini trangia, less bulky, cost about £20 from Amazon.

If you're camping in the kitchen, you may as well just use the cooker in the background.

What fuel is used for the tin can?

I have the old Tranger, used meths as fuel and have had it for about 30 years now.

Meths, filled up to just below the first set of holes.

Actually, that was a bit stupid of me to say that, as I couldn't really fill it to above the holes Smile

I had a fab little thing about the size of a pot of moisturiser that must have been one of those. My mother bought a house that had tonnes of junk in it and it was in an old-ish army kit bag in the attic. I yoinked it for camping but used to take it with me for for cups of tea in nice places when out on long rides. I haven't seen it since about two house moves ago Thumbs Down

I was the lucky recipient of a mini trangia kit from Yen_powel (thanks again Thumbs Up) a couple of years ago, a most useful bit of kit - just the thing for one man outings.

How safe are these petrol stoves?

I've got a coleman dual fuel but have used it very little as can see me and the stove ending up in a fiery inferno and it scares the crap out of me.

The coleman ones are pretty safe because the valve in the fuel tank is manually shut-off when the pump is not in use.

Unlike army issue #2 cooksets which rely on a spring and a bit of rubber. I've had one of those turn into an incendiary device.

The Borde Bomb is terrifying because it relys on boiling petrol to pressurise itself and the whole thing gets really hot. If it wasn't made in Switzerland for Germans, I wouldn't use it.

Mine was similar but just the little stove bit. The kits look excellent. Since gaining the car and being able to go camping (this time with a child) there has been an explosion of gigantic 'stuff'. Bigger tent, chairs and table (previously i sat on my lid/the floor and ate off my lap), a windbreak (have to use campsites now and i can't stand other people) and the stove i now use is a single ring one that was our house cooker for many months when we first moved Rolling Eyes

I've gone from a couple of panniers that had room to spare and took about 5 minutes to pack, to a car that's groaning under the weight of stuff. I think some down-sizing is in order and getting rid of the giant stove for one of them is a good start Thumbs Up

Aye, when camping with the wife/brother and his family we end up taking so much stuff I get grumpy. When I'm on my own it's...

I have a Sunngas Alpine Stove. Its brilliant, it folds up small...and has a pipe extending from the gas cannister, so it's more sturdy for cooking, no danger of the pan tipping over. I spent a while researching stoves before I decided I wanted this one.

It has a good gas control, so basically you can heat up water for a cuppa tea in no time flat or nice and slowly. Also has a self-igniting button.

ooo i like that. Very un-wobbly looking. It's a necessity now to be able to walk off and leave the pan unattended while i am in goal/rescuing Action Man from the nettles/combing the grass for lost lego. That one looks good. Nice and little to keep in the car for lunch on the beach in the winter too Thumbs Up

hahaha! I did think i'd turned into my dad (grumpy camper) when we went camping this time. I shouldn't minge really, we've been on pubic transport for years so no camping at all, but it was a bit of a culture shock to do 'stuff and people' camping Laughing

Lol @ "shouldn't minge " and quoted in case of future editing.

I'm a super grumpy camper. I lived in a tent for 3 months on my tour of Britain and the one thing that really gets on my wick is the constant fucking hammering of tent pegs. Seems that the first thing people pack to go camping is a hammer. It's incessant.

Unless you're errecting a marquee with 4ft steel spikes and a sledge-hammer, all you're going to achieve is a set of bent tent pegs. If you can't push the damned things in by hand, they aren't going in. Leave the fucking hammer at home.

Haha! I'm attempting (but failing) to phase it out of my vocabulary as our 'colourful' neighbour is known as Bloody Minge Arse Upstairs and i was caught out when Tiny Cornish used the phrase at school. ooopsie Laughing

I think the tent pegs is a testosterone thing. Men who spend all year in an office get outside on their holiday and feel the need to clump the crap out of things and burn stuff in order to assert themselves in front of nature Wink
