hi Guys,
Looking to replace my chain and sprockets on my 2005 Honda VT 125 Shadow. It's done nearly 12,000 miles and I suppose it's time for a change.
Should I go for the O ring or X ring? Not quite sure which to go for as the haynes manual says it's DID520DM.
Anyone recommend the kit i should go for. Don't mind speanding a little extra if it means better qualit/performance etc...

Thumbs Up

Funny i am also looking. Was about to get an X ring and someone said its not worth the extra and the O will do the job just as well. My bike is shown 22k and still has the same chain and sprockets from new in 1985. Wish i could find the brand as i would have another. Its an O ring. Its looking like i am sticking with O ring.

If you're going to change the sprockets too, I can highly recommend using genuine Honda sprockets rather than aftermarket ones. As anyone will tell you, the longest lasting chain they ever had on their bike was the one it came with when it was new.

Honda actually make chain and sprocket kits for most of their bikes and they aren't bad in terms of price compared to pattern ones. It's just getting hold of them that seems to be inexplicably difficult.

A Honda dealer SHOULD be able to get one in for you, it's just persuading them to do it that can be difficult, because looking a Honda part number up on the computer then ordering it is such an effort and clearly not the job of someone who works in a motorcycle spares department at a Honda franchise.

I can't find a part number for a kit but here's the ones for the seperate sprockets:

Front sprocket: 23801-KGB-900
Rear sprocket: 41200-KGB-900

As Stinkwheel says really.
But if you cant do that then as long as you buy a decent brand of chain (DID) then it wont make much difference whether you go for an O or X ring.

Just make sure its adjusted and lubed properly.

You have never clearly never had a DID ZVM-X chain, the original lasted about 24k miles and the adjustment was maxed out, I changed the ZXVM after 31k miles it still had 6 lines of adjustment but had a few stiff links and as I was going touring in France with the missus I got everything done. Both chains had a scotoiler for the duration (I have the original bill of sale from when the scotoiler was fitted).

Aye, pretty pricey, but they SHOULD do a complete kit which works out more cost effective. I was £115 for the OEM chain and sprocket kit for my VFR750. A noticeably better fit and finish on the sprockets than pattern ones I've used previously and they had the sound damping rubbers and anti-deralieur plates on. The chain was an unlabelled DID o-ring which has lasted a very long time with minimal maintainance.

You can get engine service kits and clutch service kits off Honda too, all OEM parts. The clutch one was cheaper than a set of EBC pattern plates and included new springs and bolts.

It's a 125, I wouldn't bother with a decent chain, I'd screw everything I can out of the old one then buy a shite cheap non o ring to replace it. in 4000 neglectful miles my 125 only needed it's crap standard Chinese chain adjusted once. they just don't have enough power for it to matter in my experience, for what little gain there is it's not worth the money and effort. totally different story with something bigger

Ahh the good old 125 days where you would take a link out the chain when it was stretched and turn sprockets round when the teath start to bend. Very Happy I have even turned tyres round when the trail tyres wear down at a funny angle.

I tend to go with DID X-ring chain kits if i'm planning to keep the bike long enough for it to matter.

But I was told that the engine can get screwed if the chain suddenly broke.
Better to replace the chain before it dies otherwise it's an expensive engine overhaul job.

The important bit is the number, that tells you the size. The letters are just variations in strength and seal arrangement. Any 520 chain will fit.

Cool thanks!

I'll be ordering this one.
But does it normally come with a master link or should I order that separately from Ebay? Thumbs Up

Honda do sell a 'kit' as per Lings

https://www.lingshondaparts.com/honda_motorcycle_parts_selection_pfk.php?block_01=13KGB1S1&block_02=F__2200&block_03=6373

But I would expect to pay this sort of price for a kit for my R1 and not for a 125.

I use a spring clip on my KTM enduro DID 'X' ring chain, but then it is being put under totally diiferant conditions to the R1.

Wemoto will do a reasonable quality chain and sprocket kit.But do not necessarily go for the cheapest.Poor quality or really cheap sprockets could be badly machined and be out of round. You might only find this out when adjusting the chain once fitted, where you may well find that the chain is too tight in one place and too loose in a differant part of the rear wheel rotation.I have experienced this and could not figure this out until I removed the new rear sprocket from the wheel and checked it on a lathe, the centre hole having been machined slightly off centre.

Do I still need to buy a master link once I've ordered the above DID kit?

Cheers

Whenever I have bought a DID kit it comes with a link.If you specify when ordering that you want either a split or soft link then your supplier will send what you want.
