Hi all, new to the forums here and only been riding 6 months, bought my 04 cbr second hand, havnt had much trouble with it except the obvious chain and sprocket and clutch cable replacements, recently and its been really annoying me when i change from first gear to second it sometimes clicks up, then kind of knocks down into neutral by itself and i have to knock it back up again, also sometimes if i brake then go to gear down more the gear level under my foot is very very very light and i can click down and up with my foot and it wont go into gear, i'm sure this is a common diagnosis but i would like someone who knows what the problem may be so i can get it fixed as i feel something is about to break on the gear end since its recent poor sluggish performance, also the bike wont really go past 40mph even at high revs in 4'th and 5'th i dont know if this is normal or has anything to do with the gear/clutch problem, a brand new clutch cable has just been fitted and proffesionaly adjusted but hasnt solved the gear problem really.

i would be very appreciative of someone with better knowlege and experience than myself as i'm very new to bike mechanics and i am still learning all the basics.

Karma hi dude,

find your bike on cmnsl and see the exploded views, print them off if you can.

see the gear selection page, the gear lever ( foot operated ) should sit in the mid position, which is sprung loaded for up and down.

is your gear lever linkage adjustable for hieght?? if so then this may be the cause of gear selection problems, hope fully nothing wrong inside the engine?

poor performance is something else i would imagine. when was she serviced last? oil change, plug, air filter, valve clearance and cam chain.

how many miles has she done and some pics for the site would be good. Smile

If you are anywhere near Maidstone in Kent, I'll happy have a look, I have had so many of these buggers Laughing

The sluggish performance, check the choke cable for sticking, check the chain for correct tension and perhaps clean the carb/air filter.

The gear change, adjust the clutch so there is a little bit of play in the lever. You should be able to go 1st>2nd with no clutch used at all at 5k+ but its normally a case of not snapping it in hard enough. Thumbs Up

I found this with my CBR125 too. If I only lightly switched in to second it could drop in to neutral if I tried to give it beans. A firm click never gave me any troubles.

I do find you helpful, but its a basic 125.

Its a VERY simple bike to work on. The gear lever is just sitting on a shaft, its not adjustable. You need to snap it from 1st to 2nd, its a big jump.
