first solo ride

so i had my first solo ride today, was out on my bike for about 6 or 7 hours.

Started going around quiet roads, doing the left/right turns, gear changes, traffic lights and stops ect to get used to the bike as its the first time i had it out.

then i wanted something more challenging so i rode up to the bike school and back.

Then i felt it wasn't enough, so i went from thanet down to whitstable along all the back roads. mostly 30 zones with a few 40's and a couple of 50's. Wasnt so confident going along at 50 so stuck to 40/45 and to the left side so traffic could over take safely.

problem is, on the way back, i got turned around a few times and found myself on the thanet way dual carriageway! its a 70mph limit!

i didnt exactly enter onto it by choice, it was really badly signed at that entrance to it. Anyway, i decided to pottle along at 50mph, yes, 20 below the limit. But once i got more comfortable i took it up to 65 for a while. kept to the left lane so traffic wasnt heavily affected. But it was a nice ride, the carriageway has a couple of roundabouts in it so got to make full use of all the gears properly.

about 134km today which is a little over 83 miles.

for a first solo ride, i'd say thats quite successful! No accidents, pass many police cars along the way and never got pulled over once. Very pleased with myself

Not sure, but on 70 mph carriageway, too far left would make you less visable and more likely to get hit from behind ?

IMHO if it is a 70 you need to be doing at least 75, every car/bike that overtakes you is a potential danger to you or others. Speed is safe.

And as said above dont worry dual carriageways have loads of room the pain in the arse is when your forced to overtake some plonker hyper miler doin 46 mph in the rain and wind with your mirrors vibrating like crazy.

And also.consider yourself blessed that your 125 bike can do more than 57 mph.

I avoid Dual carriagesways anyway, I can ride them no issue. But I don't like labouring my YBR holding it at 65. I'll save those for my big Bike I know I can ride in a straight line.
Besides, back rounds are more of a challenge for a learner like me.

the 50 zones where dual carraigeways as well i think. there was two lanes on each direction.

as for the 70mph, it was mostly a straight with slight bends (those who have ever gone from canterbury (and surrounding areas) to thanet will know the road.

the problem is its the most direct route between the two parts of SE kent. although i dont mind riding it, im very...cautious about going on it. i think for the time being i will try and avoid it.

more time on the roads and i'll get there lol.

my bike was going along at about 8500/9000 RPM (out of about 12/12k) at 65 so i probably could have hit the limit but there was strong cross winds which also took me away from pushing.

thinking a little harder about it, need to check over my left alot more as i think i only did it a few times.

Don't worry about being shaken by big dual carriageways, I still avoid them if possible on my 125 (it's not a nice place to be, 15mph behind everyone else, unstable in wind and bike screaming its tits off).

remember my first time on a 70mph road on my 125, ( it was only a few months ago) was a bit like 'wtf' for about 5 mins then it settled in,

my bike rarely gets to 70 though normally max's out at 65.

the weirder feeling from first going on them is when you then hit a 30 zone and it feels like you're not moving anymore
