Controlling music on motorway?

Hi guys, when I'm on the motorway I like to have my Ipod on otherwise the boredom will make me insane. Only problem is I can't concentrate very well when I have to (filtering through traffic or when leaving the motorway and going onto normal roads etc) so have to pull into a service station to turn it off. Is there anything I can get to control it while riding, cable with controls or handlebar mounted or something? cheers

I can think of two techie options but they're more generic rather than specific iPod.

(1)
Get a waterproof case and mount on handlebars. Some available with their own locking system (see eBay) or you could try for one with a RAM mount (more flexible for mounting other stuff). Case will have hole for 'phones and you should be able to press the controls through the case cover (stop/pause at least). Example from amazon click here.

(2)
Get a bluetooth headset for your helmet and a bluetooth transmitter for the iPod (fits in 3.5mm socket, again see eBay then see if cheaper elsewhere). The Chinese kit is affordable rather than spending lots on Scala, Interphone, etc. kit. Then can just adjust volume etc. on side of helmet. You can also transfer it to different helmet if needed. Get one with A2DP protocol for music. Early/cheaper versions don't have this and so only talk to mobile phones.

I am currently searching through and about to order headset so I can use Sony Walkman MP3 (it has build in bluetooth, not sure about iPods).

Controls on the cable sounds fiddly and a bit hard with bike gloves but I'm prepared to be proved wrong on that.

My Schuberth C3 (cnut of a thing) has the bluetooth collar fitted.
Sound reproduction from my iTouch is superb.
The collar has a function that monitors ambient noise so that as you speed up the wind gets louder so the volume to the speakers increases.

But to do this from scratch would set you back 400 for the hat and 300 for the collar.

Thanks guys, some good suggestions should have said my budget is about £20 so a new lid is a bit unlikely will have a look into one of those handlebar mounts

I do it on the motorway all the time.

Either: stick the glove in the grip of your throttle hand and just hold tight. Or stick it on top of the clocks behind the screen. Even better, get rid of the iPod get a cheapy cheap USB player with very defined buttons you can press through the pockets.

I decided to get an MP3 player specifically for on the bike recently. Was using an iPod nano, which died.

I've got a Sony player now, in the USB stick style. Clips to the outside of my jacket, down somewhat low so the bike screen protects it. Has a wheel to change tracks, and the play/pause button is a good size.

Charges up pretty quickly, with 90 minutes playback from a couple of minutes charge, which is excellent.

I mean seriously, do you have to turn your stereo off in the car when you leave the motorway?

You need one of the following: a) better helmets b) louder bikes c) better earplugs

i can listen to dubstep at full whack wherever im riding and it never causes me any issues. I can also have it on relatively quietly at any speed and its perfectly listenable.

My point was serious by the way, if you cant concentrate fully with loud music on, then chances are your not giving 100% attention at lower volumes either.

its not the concentration thats the problem, its not being able to hear what goes on around you, when filtering all sorts can happen and I like being able to hear it, and when I'm going 70+ then the shite Bandit screen is ridiculously loud so music has to be on full

The answer is simple my friend..


Get a bluetooth set up. You then have gloved sized buttons to be able to adjust the volume as you go along.

Most of my tracks are trance/dance music which i listen to all the time.
I find, if a certian music track makes me ride faster / unable to concentrate then I move it to a different playlist.
I also have a button to pause the music if I wish...
