Hi all, can anyone give me a quick rundown of the correct routine's.

I've always done mirrors then a shoulder check in the direction I'm turning, indicate, lifesaver, manoeuvre.

I suspect it will vary abit from rider to rider, but general process is the same though.
Mine is the same as MILF Parv Thumbs Up I was always taught

• Mirror - Mirror ( first mirror check to on the direction of turn )
• Signal
• Lifesaver
• Manouver

While we have a thread like this open.
If I've completed a turn, for example moved into a side road, do I need to complete another lifesaver now I'm traveling on the new road?

I normally do lifesavers before moving into position (roundabout / junction) and another before leaving the exit / junction.
Is this Test ready?

Thanks Very Happy

on exiting a roundabout i left LS. then as i continue into the road i always right LS incase some egit is trying to overtake me into the exit...... i do a second right LS as im turning right, the amount of egits (normally women in 4x4's) who cut the corners

M, S, L , M, L

tends to be my process... theres no such thing as a wasted lifesaver.

i always keep an eye on my mirrors. and rarely have to Lifesaver during riding down a road (except position change Razz )

always be prepared for an egit not looking - today somebody in a 07 golf mirrors folded in started pulling into my lane on DC as i passed... horn and he was like white as if he saw a ghost...

got to the roundabout a few hundred yards up, and i said to him "try popping your mirrors out, and using em pal.... might kill somebody next time!"

Rule of thumb: Do a lifesaver any time where your manoeuvre could put you in the path of another vehicle or cyclist.

Examples:
- Switching lanes
- Switching from position 1-3 inside a lane
- Turning a corner
- Overtaking a vehicle, before pulling back in
- Moving out to overtake
- Joining a road from a slip-road
- etc.

There may be a few unnecessary ones there but I have to do them all being as I have no mirrors to check. Thumbs Up

To pull away from side of a road

left mirror
right mirror
shoulder check
then just before you pull into the lane another final shoulder check Thumbs Up

Anyone who has done a CBT should know that the routine is OSMPSL.

Observation - Mirror/s followed by a shoulder check in the direction you are moving into.

Signal

Manoeuvre

Position

Speed

Look - Consider a Lifesaver before committing to move.

If you are on test and you Mirror, signal THEN lifesaver and see the vehicle that was in your blindspot braking heavily you ARE going back for a retest!

OSMPSL is a very simple system to remember and can be used to deal with every hazard with a little bit of thought and adaptation Wink

I've been doing a bit of mod 1 practice in a local car park and was just wondering about observations for the slalom and figure 8. Are you supposed to do observations for each cone or is it just the observation for starting off?

Would seem odd to do it for each cone, not sure where you'd slalom or figure 8 out on the roads - but then it could be testing your ability to weave and be observant.

Before the Mod1 the examiner will tell you to treat the MMA (motorcycle manoeuvring area) as if it is the road including all necessary observations.

Thinking logically would you do a lifesaver at each cone?

Of course not!

Before you move off at least have a good look in the mirrors or better still have a glance over each shoulder - easy Smile

but the cones would represent "pot holes" or "speed bumps" or "parked cars" you would LS before each manouver in this circumstance....

HOWEVER: every youtube vid ive seen, they dont do a lifesaver, except when pulling off!

A lifesaver to each side everytime you pull off is all that's needed on the mod 1, look around plenty while reversing the bike into the bay too.

What about at traffic lights before setting off, I've always done a right shoulder check if going straight on or turning right and a left if going left but should I be checking both ? before even moving ?

Yep, you're supposed to shoulder check each side (for pedbois/cyclists etc) before pulling away when on the road.

That's why you have to do them on mod 1, because you're to treat the course as if it was on the road.

Sorry but I think you are a bit confused here.

Yes it is OSM/PSL, but you do signal before the lifesaver and before changing lane position. So if it was a junction for example:

Observations - left then right mirror
Signal
Manoeuvre into your new Position but remember your LIFESAVER to check the blind spot before you move over.
Speed - slow down
Look - go if clear

The lifesaver is something you do immediately before changing your lane position. Get the signal on so people know what you intend to do then check the blind spot and move position.

This is the way the DSA want it done (check the book) and I got plenty of people through a Mod2 teaching exactly this.
