Does it have no wheels?
Seriously though, at a price like that, if it hasn't been nicked, it's a bargain. Don't worry about the mileage, that's not high for a bike like that. I'd bite their hand off for it. |

Ste's list here is a great guide for buying a used bike. Good luck, hope it goes well. |

Without any idea of your riding experience, or mechanical sympathy, there's not much I can advise. Call the seller before you go, and ask them not to start it before you arrive, feel the engine to make sure it's cold so you know that they've done what you've asked. With the engine cold, start the bike, if it starts first or second time, carry on, if not, be ready to walk away. Check the engine and frame for rust, especially on the downpipes from the engine to the exhaust, they can be expensive to replace if you have to. Try and get a test ride, even if the current owner just pillions you around, you'll have a better idea of how the machine is mechanically. If you still feel completely clueless about it, and have no mates that can help, bob down the local mechanics, and offer them a crate of (nice) beer to come with you and look it over.
In all fairness though, the best advice is that if you don't feel right, even if it's just niggling doubt- walk away, your instincts are right for a reason. Everyone buys a lemon at some point, might be the first bike, might be the twenty-first bike, so don't worry too much if it does suck. For the money you're paying, the odds are in your favour to get something that works, especially with that length of MOT left on it. |

Make sure you do an HPI check on the bike before parting with any money. Otherwise the bike is a steal if in good nick.
It would be best if you can take someone with you who knows something about bikes. If not, google and read up a common used bike checklist, familiarise yourself with it and do them yourself. The usual downpipes/exhaust, untoward engine noises, fork stanchions for rust/fork seals, head bearings, chain/sprocket state, etc.
You'll get an overall impression just from the general state of the bike, the apparent mechanical nouse of the owner, what work he's done etc. How long has he had it? When did he last change the oil and how frequently? (Manual states every 5,000 miles, I do mine every 2,000 to 3,000). Has he had the clearances checked? (nominally to be done 2,500 miles). If you can't bag a test ride or a suitably insured biker mate a test ride or go pillion (unlikely if he's still on Ls), the at the very least I'd want to see him riding the bike up and down, both slowly (he can demonstrate the clutch and back brake operate) and up to 30 mph (demonstrating it changes through at least the first 3/possibly 4 gears and that the brakes work fine.
They're nice bikes, great to learn on and for pottering around town for pennies. If you're ginormous make sure you have a good sit on it, to get a feel of the ergonomics. It's a tiny bike, so if you're 6ft 5 you may find it too small.
As stated if you get any bad feelings about either the bike or the owner walk away. There'll be another bike available next week somewhere. You won't find another grand that quick I'll bet
Good luck

+1 if you're stuck. Except maybe Alpha09, unless you need it testing on how well he can stack it ____________________ Prize cunt
