Just had a friend's Yamaha R6 noise tested at Brands Hatch.

It has a custom (pretty much non existent) exhaust and came out at 121.7db, around 5 times the noise limit at a lot of circuits and quoted by the tester as being "about as loud as an F1 Car"...oops! :p

What circuit has a 24db noise limit...

I fart louder than that.

From Wikipedia:
The decibel (dB) is a logarithmic unit that indicates the ratio of a physical quantity (usually power or intensity) relative to a specified or implied reference level. A ratio in decibels is ten times the logarithm to base 10 of the ratio of two power quantities.

The limit will be about 115dB.

its getting a bit silly.. just found out mallory next week is a 95db day.. my CBR blows 94 on a good day with just a slip on can and standard system. if im nearly on the limit i can only guess the trouble everyone else is going to have on higher tuned machinery..

you know its bad when bikes come out of the factory failing the noise tests

My GPR twin cans, with the baffles in, was tested at 110 at Mallory. Gutted.

I dread to think what the ART cans on my TRX would test at. I currently have the standard ones back on which are insanely quiet. Need to find something in the middle I think...

Basically decibels are not additive units, they are on a logarithmic scale as described.

Much like the richter scale, a scale 9 earthquake is an order of magnitude stronger (10 times stronger) than a scale 8.

Decibels work in the same way, so 23dB would be a lot quieter than 115dB (way way quieter than 5x).

What would the ratio be between 105db and 121.7db then?

Not sure if 5 x is correct,

'pretty much non existant' exhausts are soo stupid. Never understood why people think being offensively noisy and annoying everyone else is somehow 'cool'.

Oooh, your bike is well noisy and has no mirrors. You must be that Francis Rossi bloke, please sign my t-shirt.

My Gixxer failed the 105db test at Cadwell last year. Those nice men in scrutineering still let me out though as the bike is 20 years old and I am ancient - their rational was that an old codger like me wasn't likely to rev the thing very much....

Long time since I've done this but do you not also have to factor in how far from the source the measurement takes place.

I know this because I looked into a louder horn (not the same as exhaust but same principle). Now to get the maximum db reading these are measured inches away from the device.

About 32 times louder.

3db is double the noise. So 108db is double, 111 is 4 times, 114 is 8 times, 117 is 16 times and 120 is 32 times. So 121.7 is probably around 50 times louder than 105db

All the best

I'm not convinced by the loud pipes save lives thing, I've never noticed a difference filtering with or without a baffle in.

Also, if I am sat in traffic in my car and a bike comes past, can't think of an occasion where I have heard it prior to it being practically next to my door*. Most of the exhaust noise is directed at those who aren't in a position to not see you anyway.

* I NEVER listen to the radio, but I do drive a noisy old diesel.

Everyone thinks that having a loud exhaust stops accidents and makes people see you, but it doesnt. im quite often sat in a car and even with a loud bike i cant hear the bike until its alongside the car.

Loud exhaust are unneeded. They just piss people off.
