Would it be better to SORN it and keep it somewhere? It won't be costing you anything if it's uninsured and you're not taxing it. Also, when your circumstances improve it'd be cheaper to recommission an existing bike than to buy another one.

You can rollover your ncd for a couple of years too if you ring your insurance at renewal time each year Thumbs Up

ive never understood the 'im giving it up for financial reasons' thing,
if you have a car, then surely that would be the first thing to go, its
generally more expensive and will leave a relatively cheap to run bike
to get around on.

If you have no car, then a few trips on the bus more than wipes out any
savings getting rid of the bike would have had.

I mean, around here, fairly rural, a day ticket on the bus is close to a fiver,
a few times a week and that's £60 a month.. more than enough to run a bike,
with the added benefit of not having to spend time on the poor mans wagon.

if you are on the dole as someone suggests, then surely having a bike is
a bonus, interviews easier to get to, you can look for jobs outside of whats
accessible by public transport, look for night shifts etc etc

But that's just my way of thinking, id cut back on everything else before the
bike went.

If you don't use the NCD in two years then you lose it.

125s are often more expensive to buy and to insure. The only positive point is the tax.

I paid less to insure my 2004 GS500F than I would have paid to insure my 2004 CBR125 before I sold it.

Also I don't think this is the "for sale" thread, because it has no information about the bike at all, not just pics or price.

I don't know exactly how the insurance thing works now, but don't do what i did and lose 6yrs NCB on bikes. I'f id thought about it more, id have got an old Honda C90 and just kept it taxed/insured as required to keep my NCB's while i've not been riding.

I know insurers now don't want to see 5years NCB on a C90 if your trying to insure a new R1, but also i don't see how they have got any way around the dodge that is buying an old cheap moped etc, and keeping that insured without even riding it if required. They can't take away your NCB because it was accrued on a moped surely?

Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear you are so down on your luck Laughing Laughing Laughing

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

NCB lasts two years, if you are going to be away longer than this, keep your paperwork and visit a proper insurance broker when you come back, if it's anything like car & van insurance, a good broker can negotiate a discount equivalent (or thereabouts) to your old NCB.

From post passim, I'm not entirely convinced that Mr Ball could ever really have afforded a bike. It's all borrowed money.

Insurance is heavily skewed by the profile of the people who ride that type of bike, rather than any particular engine capacity. CBR125s would typically be ridden by boys in their teens or early 20s who want to go as fast as they can as soon as they can; in other words, they're trouble to an insurance company.

I did a big comparison on insurance last time I renewed owing to my curiosity. A new Hornet cost 266 TPO; the almost identical CBR600F was 480. The Yamaha Vity scooter (completely gutless powered office chair whose only positive attribute is low price for a branded object) was 217, while a Vespa GTS250 with almost 3 times the power was 139. Most expensive bike I checked (I wasn't trying for it though) was a Ducati 848 at 1540.

To find a cheap bike to insure, you should find a bike ridden by people who don't get into many accidents.

The biggest positive for a 125, to me, is the small size. They almost feel like bicycles. But they're no good outside of 40mph zones, 40mph being your effective speed limit should you encounter a moderate hill.

This

When I sold the R1 I was looking at £120 a month on Bus fares to work (which droped me outside of work) thats a 5 days week of work
Or £90 a month by train with a mile walk to and from the station.
I chose the train most days to try and save - and I was bored.
Im so glad to have a bike back, and its not really costing that much as I would spend on P.transport.

bike cost £200
insurance £216 (a year TPO) (no NCB, provisional liscence holder)
tax £16

if you remove the cost of the bike, lets face it, selling the 600 would cover the cost of buying a 125, i doubt you'd get insurance on a 400 or more much less than what im already paying.

honestly, if you add in some NCB then its fairly good.

my monthly cost for biking (excluding tax, i mean its £16 lol) including fuel is about £60.

£15 a fortnight in fuel, £30 a month insurance.
