I picked up on this old thread when doing a search on my scratty little runabout:-
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=96026

Apparently, or so my Lad was informed when he had the machine, it was Japanese built for the Chinese market, but because of either slow sales in China or a shortage of CGs arriving from the new factories in Brazil or Turkey a batch or two were diverted to the UK.

I'd be interested in finding out how many of these unusual little machines are still running!

Toodle Pip!!

The odd thing is it being a '99 model. Though I can't find any mention of it in a flick through the Haynes, I could swear blind that I read -somewhere- that the early models (i.e. mid 70s) had 4-speed, all-down boxes, before Honda switched to the more familiar 5-speed, 1-down 4-up type.

Could be that they sacked off the old tooling for that model of gearbox to their Chinese subsidiary to get a bit more life out of it in an environment where the 3-speed C50 and C90 was still king, and the quality of road surfacing didn't lend itself to trying to break the sound barrier but the bigger engine was desirable for slogging up hills...?

Then the Chinese turn around and show that they'd much rather buy cheap unlicensed domestic rip-offs of the modern 5-speed version instead of official, expensive 4-speeds, and Honda has to do SOMETHING with them ... so flogs them to Europe as cheap grey imports?

Then again maybe that particular one just ate its original box somehow and all the repairer could find hanging around that would fit the housing was an all-down 4-speed rig. The rub is whether the casing says 5-4-3-2-N-1 or N-1-2-3-4...

Top speed would probably be an issue because it's unlikely the top gear would be any taller than 1:1.00, which is what top was on the early 5-speeds. The modern incarnations have something like 1:0.85, with the same first gear, and even 4th is about 1.05... So first may be a little taller and less punchy, but top would still be totally out of juice by 60mph and revving like a mehtorfekcur. Ditto if it's a 5-speed that's lost its top gear... even worse if it's lost 1st and has had a custom linkage and sprocket set put on so that you start from a 2nd gear that seems more like 1st-and-a-half, because the 1-2 gap is much larger than 4-5.

I've received a bit more info. Apparently the Importer was David Silver's. There was a brief shortage of CGs for the UK market and they became aware of a batch of bikes that had been sat in China for a couple of years.
