Hi,

Im 30, I have CBT, and want to have full licence for a 100cc scooter. I dont really care about any bigger bike in the future.

i) Is it best to do the theory test independantly, get it out of the way, then look for a test? Or do it all in one?

ii) What test is the cheapest route to get pillion on a 100cc? I was told when buying my 100cc the other day that there is a "scooter test" for 70 quid which will give me up to 250cc full licence. I cant find any proof of this anywhere though!!!

Thanks in advnace...

Andy

The moped test allows you to ride a 50cc (EDIT:with a pillion)... but a 100cc needs a full A or A1 license(EDIT: To carry a pillion). Sorry.

If your over 17 you may aswell take the A2 Restricted test, enabling you to ride any bike restricted to 33BHP. Or DAS enabling you to ride any bike straight away.

There is also an A1 Test, which means you can ride up to a 125cc bike without L Plates and take pillions.

There is no test that enables you to ride up to 250cc as I am aware.

He can ride a 100cc scooter on a CBT

But for pillion you need to go do your full licence, A2 is going to be best but it will cost you a fair bit of cash.

I think all the standards tests cost the same to take.

It's the training that's going to differ... if you are going to get official training with a hire bike you might as well do your DAS.
If you are going to do it on your own bike you will have to do the A1 licence.

i have a car license with full moped entitlement (so yes, you can have a 50cc with pillion without any motorcycle test at all in this case)

im now getting a 100cc, so I have just done cbt, but I now need to do theory and a test. But this looks like the one for me...

125cc Training. (After test pass restricted to 33bhp for 2 years)
Test day 125cc course.
Suitable for a very capable rider that has a CBT certificate.
Consists of 2 hours pre-test training followed by the ministry test. Cost £102. https://www.ncsl.co.uk/biketraining/

....Full license for 125, and then up to 250cc ish after 2 years for a hundred squid. Bargain (unless of course I want a bigger bike later in life... hmm)

no mate, that gives you immediate access to a bike up to 33bhp, then after two years you can ride anything you like

I don't think there is a 'lower' test

When you take your test on a 125cc you will be restricted to to 33hp for 2 years. After the two years are up you will be able to ride any sized bike.

There is a license you can get which allows you to ride 125cc without L plates, with pillions and on motorways, but the cost of the test and the bike you have to do it on is the same as for the A2 test for the 2 years of 33bhp.

Whats the point of paying for the 125cc test and training for it, and then doing your 33bhp test and training? Confused Eh?

Forgot to ask. Can you do a test on an automatic ?
If he's done his CBT on one, 2 hours won't be enough to get used to a geared bike Thinking

If you do your test on an automatic then you're only licensed to ride automatics. AndyD, you'd be much better off skipping the 125cc license and go straight to do your DAS on a geared bike, if you want to ride a 100cc auto ped after that you can, but when you want something with a bit more power you'll be able to get something as a 100cc ped won't be good for carry pillions.

Hi

There is a light motorcycle test that gives you a licence for an 11kW bike of up to 125cc, on which you can carry pillions / use the motorways / not have L plates. The only difference to the conventional test is that you can do it on a smaller bike (normal test must be taken on a bike of at least 120cc).

Given that the test will cost the same, the training will cost the same and the only saving will be if you already have a 100cc bike and want to use that for the test then I would say it is not worth bothering with.

All the best

Keith

I agree with Ste, unless you are planning on taking a very small/light pillion then your 100cc bike will struggle coping with a pillion as well as yourself.

Have a read through the DSA website for infomation about the moped license. Basically it costs you £48 and must be done on a 50cc ped which doesn't go above 50kmph. All it offers you that you can't do with just a CBT is you're allowed to carry a pillion and not use L plates.

It seems the light test is the one you've heard about, although as it's been stated, it's fairly useless you taking that, and you're much better off taking your A2 test.

I wouldn't bank on going far with a pillion on a 100cc. My 125 pushing out about 11bph is nigh on useless with a pillion. Maybe that's just my inexperience but it was slow with a capital SLOW.

I don't see the point of taking the A2 either. He would have to hire a bike if he is going to do so, so might as well hire a 500 and do the DAS... from what I know the test is actually the same.

Unless of course places have 125cc scooters to hire that is.

well if the cost is the same, sure, Ill do the full test, but if 48quid will give me what I want rightnow, its a lot cheaper than a 400quid intensive course.

As for 100cc being enough, I have been riding a 50cc city express round town with the missus on the back (slim and small Wink without problem. Sure its gutless, but it hits the usual 25-30mph eventually.

However, its definitely funny with 90quids worth of supermarket shopping hanging from every possible place! (no not there), and doing 12mph up the hill outside my house with her and a rucksack , and half a dozen carrier bags .

Anyone been to thailand and seen what they can do with a moped? Well, its a exactly like that... way overloaded. As for going long distance, i agree, no way.

Remember this is going to be on a geared bike and not an automatic. So as long as you think you can get the hang of a geared bike in two hours then you'll be fine. Otherwise you may find you need a couple of days to get used to it.

And a lot of people seem to think the 500 is actually easier to ride than the 125 geared bike, as the DAS doesn't cost any more, you might as well just do that Smile.

well i passed my test today on a 125, which I felt was easier than a bigger heavier bike, especially on the uturn for example. I had riden geared bikes before, so 4 hours training, plus 2 hours on my own on the bike yesterday was fine. It ended up costing me £48 for the test, plus 118 for 4 hours training + 2 hours training on test day + 2 hours on my own hiring the bike (ie. 156quid). not bad if u want to carry pillion, and can wait a couple of years for a large bike. My instructor also told me that next year the practical test is changing, and there will be 2 practicals to do! 1 off road, 1 on road! They really dont want people to ride bikes do they!
