R6 or K1 GSXR?

Just sold my CRM250 and once I've sold my CB-1 I'm going to get a new bike, primarily for trackdays but it has to be road legal too.

My budget is around £1500-£1700 with cosmetic condition unimportant so I've whittled it down to an earlyish R6 or a K1 GSXR (probably the 750 just because I may as well) although if I could find a B1H or CBR600RR in that budget I'd definitely consider them too.

Any opinions on all these bikes? I hear that R6s can have gearbox issues but I don't know if Gixxers have any common faults.

Handling is the main priority with reliability second. Which of these is the more capable trackbike and what should I be looking out for with them? Any other bikes worth considering that I haven't thought of?

Cat C or D would be fine...in fact it would be perfect Wink

I'd go so far as to say I would avoid a cosmetically perfect bike (unless it was underpriced) as it won't remain so and will lose value. I really couldn't care less about scraped or cracked fairings and it's very liberating not having to worry about scraping it getting through your garden gate Laughing

I think an RR would be my first choice as they seem so track focused but I just figured it would be hard to find one in my budget.

Even the trackbikes are fairly pricey unless they don't have the V5.

I’ve heard stories of the early R6’s gearboxes going bang but never had experience with them personally.

Personally I would save a bit more and go for the CBR, I want one as my next track bike!

Id go for the gixer, I just sold my k1 750 for 2k and its been set up by the new owner to track then he bottled it, perfect track bike if like mine was looked after by two lady owners and never tracked before, mine was in fabulous condition when I sold it.

TBH you should buy the best/newest bike you can afford... buying shitters is usually false economy for track ... Last thing you want is booking a track day and spending the day on a bike that doesn't run right...or sitting in the pits fcuking around with stuff (been there done that Confused

) ... Even B1s are pushing on now, i recently sold one with 5k kms which shat it water pump when the guy was taking it for a test ride at the track Neutral

he still bought it minus about 200 quid for repairs which i paid Embarassed

Ah...ok. Well I might sell it when I've got a replacement but it's really not that great...bog standard suspension etc. and down on power compared to the modern bikes. It will be cheap though Laughing

I've seen 3 R6 02 transmissions 2 were over 40k miles and and none seemed to have any wear suggesting that they would likely start failing soon.

However, before choosing to buy an R6 from 99-02 do a google search for R6 5eb cylinder failure.

That will put you off! There's even one of my own threads here of my rebuild, and it requires new crankcases, and is a very common fault.
