Painted the swinging arm yesterday. Put literally no effort into preparation so the finish isn't brilliant, but I'm not going for concourse standard.

Sorry missed this, I don't remember having any trouble with the rubber mount, what problems did you have?

The tank pivots about the front rubbers, do you just have to stretch the rear one to get the 'tongue' at the back of the tank into the mount (since you can't move the tank forward)?

Ah I see, yes I had to stretch it quite far but it had obviously been made to do this. I would worry if the rubber was perished though, I don't think it would put up with it then.

Man, I'm really slacking with this.

Anyway, updates.

Stripped the rest of the bits off the frame so i can start removing the paint.

Centre stand was so caked in crap that it was blending in with the tarmac. Laughing Nothing was seized though thank god.

Forks and covers were very rusty, what's everyones view on these, can they be saved? Is it worth saving them?

I then started stripping the frame using Dichloromethane (the stuff they took out of Nitromors making it terrible). Brilliant stuff, paint starts bubbling and peeling in seconds (see picture) however it does say "WARNING WILL CAUSE CANCER" on the side of the bottle, so I would be careful. Laughing

will have to look for another fav paint stripper! everything in B&Q and halfords is crap.

You can buy this stuff very cheap off eBay, just don't go drinking it.

VHT paint stripper isnt bad. i used it on my tank. you do need 2 cans for a decent size tank though.

My fork covers (cd175) looked like them, nothing a good stripping and rubbing down wont fix. Must get around to my CD200 rebuild (one day)

Do you think the stanchions look recoverable?
There is quite a lot of rust.

Read an article in Classic motorbike the other day where they fill the indents with JB Weld (metal epoxy), might be worth a try, at the end of the day if the legs are smooth and the seals dont leak, its a pass.

Well I've really been slacking since the accident. But there's finally been some progress.

Finally got round to finishing the frame.

Once again not a concourse finish, but for the cheapest rattle cans money can buy I am thoroughly impressed with the finish.

Going to have to try and paint the headlight bracket and fork covers soon. However I'm not sure on what I should do about the colour. The tank, headlight surround and the rest of the panels are in perfect condition, however the brackets are completely shot (see pictures on previous page). Does anyone know where I could buy an exact colour match rattle can at a reasonable price? If I cant find anything sensible I will have to repaint the whole thing black or something, and I really don't want to do that.

Little more progress today.

Lower bearing cone packed with grease and new ball bearings (3/16" for anyone wondering). Leave space for 1 extra ball bearing so that they roll, rather than slide next to each other.

hi looks great im doing 1 of these up but havent got a clue when the starter motor wire goes , i know it goes under engine but then where can you help cheers maybe i should have took pictures lmao.

From memory there was a hook in the engine case and it just went up through the frame to the relay which is on the side in the rubber mount.

Not too sure on the colour yet, but it's what i had lying around.

It is the first time I've used Holts car paint though and it seemed very nice use, and gave better results than the cheap crap I used on the frame.

On holiday this week, so hopefully more progress.
