I've recently brought a bike and it's due for it's MOT Monday, Of course I can't get tax without that but I'm trying to get it all sorted asap so to avolid a fine.
I've heard about DVLA checking their computers for untaxed veichals my bikes been out of tax for 19 days now any idea how long I have to get a tax disc before I get fined etc...

Why not declare the bike SORN as you then won't get fined?

I was thinking that today; however this coming monday is when I plan to get the tax and by the time DVLA aknoledge it's classed SORN I may even already have the tax.
just wondered how long on average does it take people to get fined. I'm in no mind about thinking of not paying tax why not when it's only £15 just that the situation is difficult.

Ste is right, SORN costs nothing and will cover you for the interim.

If you've had the bike for the 19 days it has been untaxed, your fine is probably already on its way to you - although it may have gone to the previous keeper!

SORN - Statutory Off Road Notification.

Basically, if your tax is due to run out and you do not intend to ride on the road or renew it, you have to let the DVLA know by sending them a SORN notification. You can do it at the Post Office too.

SORN lasts for 12 months, but you can end it sooner just by getting a new tax disc.

If you don't do SORN or tax your bike, DVLA will issue a fine something like 14 days after the tax ran out.

Should you declare SORN then ride on the road and get caught, yo can expect an even bigger fine and possibly your bike impounded depending how/where you get caught.

Check out www.dvla.gov.uk .

You could get lucky but to register your bike as SORN you need to fill 1 form out from a Post Office so you might as well as it's not much hassle and you'll just kick yourself if you decide not to bother and then you get a fine.

My C90 was off the road for 6 months with no tax and I didn't declare it as SORN. When I finally got round to tax it again I just went to the post office and showed them the MOT certificate, insurance certificate and I fobbed her off with the V5 saying I'd only just bought the bike Very Happy

Buying road tax will change it from being SORN to back to normal.

Given that the fines for failure to tax your vehicle can range into four figures, and that it costs a pittance to tax a bike (relatively speaking), IMHO you're chancing your luck by not taxing it. Of course, if the vehicle is still registered to the previous owner, happy days, but I wouldn't count on that saving your backside!

you get 12-14 days before they'll take actions. Thats the legal line. If they dont take action after that time its their perogotive.

With SORN they are actually thinking of charging for it. You have to PAY to not use your car/bike/tractor etc. If this starts to come into effect I'll let you guys know and maybe start a petition or something?

Not strictly true, they are not legally obliged to give you a single day. However they do realise that people forget occasionally and tended to be lenient for two weeks. Now it's all done by computer, if you are one month past you will get a fine through the post - if the bike is registered to you of course.
This info comes fresh from my father in law who has just (2 weeks ago) retired from the DVLA Smile

That what I meant. they give you a leaway period but hell you can get pulled over for doing 31 mph as well. Its just general guidelines.

If you ask me, get your tax asap its not that much for a bike!

Not that I don't believe you Mike, but how come I didn't get one through for the C90 then? Is it because there was a change of keeper just after the tax expired? I dunno, lol.

Penalties
DVLA is no longer reliant on spotting untaxed vehicles on the road before action can be taken. Although on-road enforcement will continue, car tax evaders can now also be identified direct from DVLA’s vehicle record. Therefore failure to renew your car tax, within a month of expiry, can result in an automatic £80 penalty landing on your doormat. And, if you continue to drive without a valid tax disc you could be fined a minimum of £1,000.

Minimum £80 for a single one off offence from the looks of it. Persistent offenders really pay the price.
