I have just spotted another post where some-one has reffered to a modern IL4 or 'In-Line' 4.

NO!

Its a STRAIGHT-Four, as in the cylinders are bored along a common centre line. But mounted ACCROSS-THE-FRAME its a Transverse 4 NOT an 'In-Line' or IL4!

THIS is an IN-LINE-Four!
https://www.autogallery.org.ru/k/n/nimbussporth_Ernst.jpg
The cylinders are IN-LINE with wheels, NOT ''transverse' to them
This is a Danish Nimbuis of the 1950's.

Here's another, a 1930's Henderson

This is a little quirk on the concept; the Sunbeam

It's a british paralel twin of the paralell twin era, but where most, like the Bonaville were 'transverse' parallel twins, THIS is an 'IN-LINE' twin, the crank 'in-line' with the vehicle axis.

Brings us to the Triumph Rocket 3

As oposed to

Laverda Jota, a TRANSVERSE tripple!

SO... lets get terminology CLEAR HERE!

https://dayerses.com/data_images/posts/honda-cb-750-four/honda-cb-750-four-07.jpg
THIS is an 'Accross the Frame FOUR' or Transverse-4

https://www.alltimers.nl/Smalltimers/Beelden/Indian%204%20cil/Indian_4-cil_1928_smalltime.jpg
THIS is an IN-LINE 4

Now lets do Vees!

https://motorbike-search-engine.co.uk/classic_bikes/moto_morini_35.jpg
This is an 'in-line' V-Twin.... the V's splayed in-line whith the wheels.

https://www.realclassic.co.uk/bikepix/guzziv7classic09080303.jpg
This is a 'transverse' V-Twin the V splayed accross the bikes center-line

https://fauxkauai.com/WebPost1730.jpg
This is an 'in-line' V4

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/89/Honda_ST1100_engine_closeup.jpg
This is a transverse V4 (Pan Euro)

HOWEVER, there is anomolu in V-Engines.

The 'in-line' V is a 'transverse' engine, the transverse V an 'in-line' engine!

Becouse the splay of the V is at 90 degrees to the crank-shaft orientation; so installed in the frame, the 'in-line' V has a transverse crank, the transverse V an in-line crank.

So the Pan-Euro, with its V-Four engine is legitimately an 'In-Line 4', though it most decidedly ISN'T a 'straight four'.

R1, CBR600, ZXR750, GSXR1100..... STRAIGHT FOURS, ACROSS THE FRAME FOURS..... they are NOT 'IL4's!

Neither crank nor cylinders are 'in-line' with the frigging wheels!

Are we clear now!

It is an in line 4, 4 in a line. 4 pistons in a line.

If I drew a line, it would go across all the pistons.

Its an in line 4.

"Straight 4" would sound shit. Straight 6 sounds epic.

In line 4.

IL4.

Morning old codger. Thumbs Up

Yes, but I'm still calling my FZR an IL4.

So thats a straight 4, it looks gay and they are queued behind each other towards the front. Straight 4.

IL4, in a line ready to advance, IE your typical sports 4s Wink

I'm not having an old man that pushes people to get off their IL1 L plate vehicle to something like an IL2 CB125.

No not really, as Paddy says they are 4 cylinders on the same plane so are "In Line" doesn't matter what their frame/wheel orientation is. Same as a V is a V doesn't matter which way it's mounted. They are just the general category, that you put them into sub categories is of no consequence.

Hundred percent agree with Paddy, there are 4 cylinders in a line, one after the other, what you seem to be arguing or ranting about is the way that IL4 engine is mounted.

Quote:
The inline-four engine or straight-four engine is an internal combustion engine with all four cylinders mounted in a straight line, or plane along the crankcase. The single bank of cylinders may be oriented in either a vertical or an inclined plane with all the pistons driving a common crankshaft. Where it is inclined, it is sometimes called a slant-four. In a specification chart or when an abbreviation is used, an inline-four engine is listed either as I4 or L4 (for longitudinal, to avoid confusion between the digit 1 and the letter I).

https://static.ddmcdn.com/gif/engine-inline-4.gif

Still an inline 4 whether mounted transverse, slanted, backwards, upside down, like saying a V-twin mounted sideways is a transverse twin.... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Mere semantics! Laughing

Why is a parallel twin, mounted along the axis of the frame called a tandem twin? Surely it should be called an In Line twin! Wink

I believe you may be confused Mr Mike...

Transverse / Longitudinal refer to the crankshaft orientation in relation to the chassis...

Inline, V, flat etc refer to the piston orientation...

Even Honda refer to this as a "Liquid-cooled 4-stroke 16-valve DOHC inline-4"

Teffers, I would suggest that you duck, but I fear that the massive flock of airborne fucks you're expecting is entirely imaginary on your part.

Can you either quote someone when you say "you" or refer to them by name? I can't work out who you're talking to.

Well, who else is getting worked up about naming conventions of engine orientations?

After re-reading it, the issue is the nomenclature of transverse vs. IL...

I can see your point you're making, generally an engine mounted in line with the front and back wheel is 'in-line' and an engine mounted across the frame is 'transverse'. I've thought of this too, but it's just the way it is. It isn't wrong because if it was manufacturers would call it transverse 4's as opposed to IL4, but they don't, and it's their bike, how can they be wrong at describing their own machine?

Its not like its a mannerism mistake or something stupid like that where people start a sentence with 'basically' and go into extreme depth, or start any sentence with basically used completely out of context or relevance.

Have to agree that the engine can be described as an inline 4. as opposed to a V twin, V4, etc.

Then the mounting in the bike can be described as transverse, parallel, whatever.

However, I've heard old BMW K series described as a flat four Confused It's an inline 4 engine mounted horizontally (i.e. flat).

Ok, after more thought on this - does it really, really, matter? Rolling Eyes
