i will be building a bike around an engine as a new project rather than making mods to fit one to somthing else . i will be building the frame and everything else around the engine to my own desire .

i was considering these . for no other reason that each one of them appeals to me for reasons i am unaware of .

i am not familiar with any of them whatsoever . maybe you are ? if so what would be the selling point for u

(without speed being a factor )

NT 650 ,
93 XL600 TRANSALP,
86 vf400

thanks .

or if you would like to suggest any good engines you know of that would help to by giving me more to think about . cheers

Depends what the bike is for.

Town work, single or parallel twin.
Main roads/motorways, parallel twin or low tuned IL4.
Racing...obviously triple or IL4.

What about basic engines that everyone has parts for, SV650, the 500 twins, depending on how tilted you want your engine...the FZR600 engine is alright.

Slow and boring
Under powered and crap at speed or revs, weak 5th gear.
Hard to find bits for.

XJ600 (pre diversion) Is a lovely motor that can be got for fuck all. Air cooled, rev happy, smooth and reliable.
https://edbatista.typepad.com/edbatista/images/2007/02/FJ600.jpg
I should imagine CBR600 and SV650 motors are easy to get hold of as there are enough of them being ridden by "all the gear no idea" types for them to get crashed quite a bit.

RG500 motor would be the ultimate but they're rare as rocking horse pooh. RGV250 / KR1-S motors can still be had.

A Fiat twincam.

I'd LOVE to see what sort of bike you could build round one.

After all, the Yanks managed to build a motorbike round a Chevvy bigblock.

I think you either need to just get hold of one of the engines you have mentioned and just start to build a chassis around it, or otherwise have a sit down and think exactly what your wanting to build and why?

If you know what the bike is going to be for, what the budget is and have some sort of bhp and weight limit critera then you can narrow it down somewhat.

Choosing an engine to suit the project/bike and it's intended use is much more useful and appropriate than trying to choose an engine just because you like it and want to build a bike around it.

Id also advise on either copying something that has been done before or at least using similar parts and approaches as have been done before by other's to speed up the process.

I think building the frame on it's own will be hard enough without specific goals, and just picking an engine and saying that will do is likely not to achieve your end goal unless it's very loose, like just making some sort of road legal roadster style bike that has no specific demands set upon it.

Seeing as you're not looking for lots of speed and want an all-rounder, I would go for a Harley 1200 sportster engine.

Harley engines ride totally differently to Japanese engines. They are not finely engineered, highly efficient machines. Because of this, they don't follow the characteristic I find with every Japanese engine, the one where you have to rev it too much.

Ignore the numbers, a 50hp Harley engine feels far more powerful than a 50hp 500cc twin. The best bit is that I tend to change up a gear to overtake, rather than down. No point going for more revs, I just need to use the torque.

They look cool, too.

harleys are torquely low reving engines due to stroke length. If you dont want to change gears, a torquey engine will work.

Registering isn't, or at least shouldn't be too difficult. Just make sure you have a copy of the MSVA manual and ensure everything you build/buy meets the regulations, then when you go for MSVA it should be fairly straight forward.

After you have that, you can then register it. However, it will be on a Q-Plate, unless age of components can be proven (will be Q if you're building the frame yourself) and will get an age related plate based upon the age of newest components

God i bet that thing sounds highly sexual TBH!
I've got a bit of a fetish for lusty free revving V6 engines, and the Alfa V6 sounds more sonourus that most!

It has to weigh at least 130kg, so it'd need a fairly sturdy chassis id say!

Making the engine. You might want to put the crack pipe down and come back to that thought tomorrow.

Good luck with that, although John Britten managed it with a V1000 engine for the Britten Bike.
