PostPosted: 15:40 - 26 Aug 2012    Post subject: Under powered, over revving Reply with quote

So, im cruising down the motorway at about 60mph. I give it some beans to overtake a few cars, the bike gets to 70 and is sitting at around 6k rpm, I keep the throttle on and it revs to around 8k rpm but the bike doesnt speed up at all.

The engine is obviously revving higher but the bike isnt going faster, as if the wheel is spinning, which it isn't.

Any ideas on what is up. This has only happened today, after I have tightened my chain. Coincidence?

Help appreciated.

Slipping clutch. My GSXR did similar but was very pronounced, from 70 onwards it just added a few thousand rpm but no go Laughing

Or fully synth? Think it was my ZXR4 that it made the clutch slip like mad when I used fully synth. Never used it since.

Cheers guys.

The bike has felt very underpowered for a while also, related?

I've not changed the oil in a while so it can't be that, clutch it must be. Is it safe/ok to ride as I need it for work or is it best left alone till fixed?

Is it an easy fix, because I have limited knowledge and funds.

Easy fix and you can ride it but remember it will get worse so order the parts now but before you do check your cable has not come lose first or if hydrolic check the fluid. Take the ride easy as the hotter it gets the worse it will slip.

Cheers, I'll check the cable first thing. Knowing my bike it's something simple like that which causes the problem.

If not I'll take it easy and await the over revving lols before parts arrive.

Sure, don't go diving at the clutch plates like a bull at a gate.

If there's no slack in the lever, find the adjuster which screws into the clutch lever assembly on the bars. Slacked off the locknut to allow you to screw the adjuster in a bit. This'll give some slack in the cable.

I've adjusted the cable at the lever end and it hasn't helped, the cable is proper stiff though, I think the casing is bunged up a fair amount. I'll try and sort that see if it helps

Old cable is shagged, new one on order.

I'm not optimistic that it will help though.

Old cable probably dragging. New cable will sort it aslong as clutch is okay. If not , change plates and springs in clutch. Thumbs Up

Expect it to give up at anytime and leave you stranded.

Sounds like it needs replacing anyway, so keep your pecker up, you might be lucky.

New cable in with a little help from Mikey3.

The old one was so shot that between the two of us we couldn't move it through its outer casing without the use of the clutch lever. Laughing

It feels much better though I'm not convinced it has solved the problem. I shall be able to tell in a few days I'm sure.

It takes 5 minutes to whip the cover off and adjust the clutch Neutral

having problems similar to this myself. quick question, my clutch first started slipping when i went over a bump, do you think this points towards clutch springs/plates, rather than the cable?

Indeed it does.

Though if the new cable doesn't sort the problem I'm sure it will be plate/spring renewal time.

There is a fair chance it was just the cable. I had the same problem once and simply changing the cable sorted it. I was all psyched up for the hassle & expense of new clutch plates. Big smile.

Do you not have a clutch adjuster on the engine. Mine worked on a weird mechanism that pushed a rod into the engine, this was causing the slip.

Need to have no adjustment set at all at the lever end.

Make sure where the the pull/push cables that are attached at the carb end where the mechanism is attached can move freely move without it scraping/catching onto anything when it turns from off to max throttle because a sliight bend in the mechanism could make it rub against something?

Also make sure your spark plugs are ok and the HT leads to them are ok showing no corrossion where the leads fit into the plug cap ends onto the spark plugs.
