Only fail i've noticed is a crack in a frame brace, but i suppose that won't be too hard to weld together and clean up

Few bits and pieces need finding like air filter and a new throttle cable, then should be good to go, it does run, but without a proper air filter i don't want to try it.
Bluex5 off here has searched in his garage and found a circle x5 headlight, right hand switch gear, airbox rubbers and lid, all what i need for it to be just right.
hopefully update in the coming weeks as i'm busy this week ____________________ '00 Aprilia RS50 > '92 Honda CG > '99 Yamaha Fazer > '91 Yamaha RXS > '79 Suzuki X5 > 01' Honda Cg > 07' Honda Cg > 82' Kawasaki Z200 > suzuki gsxr 400 gk73a > honda vfr 400 NC30 Mod 2 Passed 09/06/2011

It's a shame you took the pictures with a potato, but it appears from the pictures to be in quite good condition.
It looks like there is some rust breaking through the paint on top of the tank. Try giving it a gentle going over with a finishing pad and then some decent paint restorer (auto glym works well). The finishing pad will remove the rust without attacking the paint, and the paint restorer will help to cover the rust a bit. I did this on a CB250RS tank that looked awful, now it looks ok - still pitted, but a bit more used and "authentic", rather than just knackered. Cheaper than a respray.
I don't know if your plans are for a full on restoration, or a clean-up and ride. I would be tempted to go with the latter option. It will still take you a few months of weekends to get it roadworthy, but then you could ride it a bit next year before deciding if you want to pull it down for a full-on restoration.
Standing is very bad for two-strokes, there is a strong likelihood of rust in assorted crank bearings after 20 years. This is why I would recommend getting it roadworthy enough to ride a bit before throwing serious money at it. It is likely to need a crank rebuild, which means you might as well go the whole hog and have a rebore with new pistons while you're at it. Seeing as you'll be spending all that on a rebuild, you might as well get the porting fiddled while you have it apart. And some decent exhausts....
This is how projects like this get out of hand.
Protip, based on experience. If you decide to strip it all down, get the frame, swingarm, and a few other bits powder coated. It does cost a few quid, but I wish I had done it rather than spend a silly amount of time sanding back parts, treating the rust, and hammeriting them. It just means I get to see hammerite gradually flake and chip away.
Finally, whatever crazy dreams you have about modding it, turning it into a cafe racer or such nonsense, don't cut anything off the frame or break any standard parts in the process. At some point you'll decide to make it standard, don't put it in a state where this is impossible. |

Nice project . Not too silly a price either, which is an increasing rarity with bikes like that.
As above, given that it's essentially all there I'd be tempted to do the bare minimum to get it on the road, ride it for a bit, then make a decision about how far you want to go in terms of restoration. Sometimes you just don't gel with a bike, and it'd be pretty annoying to find that out after you've spent large amounts of time and money restoring it, when you could have found out before! It also gives you the opportunity to uncover faults that you might otherwise have not known about. The danger with this approach is that if you like the bike and it's essentially OK, you never end up doing any more to it. That's certainly a trap I could see myself falling into. ____________________ Chris

Should've washed the bike, not the camera
Looks alright for the money. Imagine it'll look even better with a little tidying. |

Well today i received a parcel of Bluex5
https://i825.photobucket.com/albums/zz176/robyarr/bike%20stuff/IMG_20120903_202942.jpg
https://i825.photobucket.com/albums/zz176/robyarr/bike%20stuff/IMG_20120903_204255.jpg
and a haynes manual which i've forgot to put in the pile with them for some reason.
everything i pretty much need to get the bike going now, just need a battery and a air-filter, cleaned the carbs with a ultra sonic cleaner and now they are spotless, hopefully throttle cable will come soon , refresh the 2 stroke oil/ gearbox oil and see if she goes. ____________________ '00 Aprilia RS50 > '92 Honda CG > '99 Yamaha Fazer > '91 Yamaha RXS > '79 Suzuki X5 > 01' Honda Cg > 07' Honda Cg > 82' Kawasaki Z200 > suzuki gsxr 400 gk73a > honda vfr 400 NC30 Mod 2 Passed 09/06/2011
