 |
|
It's time to cut my losses with my CBR, a combination of thefts, commuting, and a "it needed it yesterday" rather than "It needs it soon" approach to maintenance has left it in a sorry state, if I get £300 for it on ebay I will be surprised, but it will cost more than that to get it into a confidence inspiring bike again. I'm sure the engine would keep on going to the end of time, but really it needs a new clutch, a new gearbox, a new chain, a new CCT...... the list goes on. Realistically I was going to buy myself a second hand engine on twenty-something,000 miles, but that will cost me £300 minimum and be a good 2 days work assuming no hiccoughs. Then I would still need to tax it and buy a new chain. And hope that the new engine wasn't buggered. On top of that my new flat doesn't really give me anywhere to fix it up even if I did buy the bits I need, so as much as it pains me to say it, my trusty CBR has to go.
I really don't want to be bikeless, plus the thought of loosing the £400 I paid out for insurance just last month sickens me slightly, so I've been eyeing up cheap replacements.
Just down the road from me is a hairdresser who has an old Honda H100 which he wheels in and out of his shop each day, last time I got my hair cut he mentioned that he was considering selling it, less than 3000 miles he says, and he only wants £300 for it. Looks clean to me from a distance, and comes with a top box. He's in his late 60's though, and hasn't ridden it for a while. Plus experience has taught me that getting a 20 year old bike that has been standing to run reliably is much easier said than done. Having said that it's just a wee little smoker, right? Spark, air and fuel, and the jobs a good-un?
So my question is, it's pay-day on Friday, I have the day off and the weekend too, so three days to make it a runner for as close as possible to the price that I will get for the CBR. Would you take the risk?
If not what would you do? Keep throwing money at the CBR? Go bikeless and loose the insurance money?
TL;DR: CBR is fubar, swap it for a H100 that has been sitting for a while? ____________________ I am a bellend, I am a man of constant sorrow, I am a gummy bear, I am a rock. |

This thread is becoming a font of information about H100s! It's making me think about my poor RXS sitting in the greenhouse.
I'll tell you what...buy it and I'll ride up to Essex for the sole purpose of thrashing you in a race on my RXS! I have about an hours work required to get it an MOT now...but other stuff with my house and TRX keep getting in the way.
Or do the sensible thing and realise that something like a GPZ500 will probably be a much less frustrating downgrade. I'm all for 100cc bikes as shopping/trips into town/backup bikes but there is no way I'd ever run one as my only transport. ____________________ Riding: BMW R1150RT `02 bought mildly crashed

I would consider a big bike but I need cheap, reliable and economical, in my experience of cheap big bikes I've not found this is a common combination. A GPZ isn't a bad suggestion, I had major electrical issues with my last one though which tarred my opinion of them slightly. |
Fair enough. If it's the A13 you probably won't find yourself maxing out a 100 and they are fantastic in traffic. I did find that my RXS clutch dragged to a ridiculous degree when stuck in traffic in the summer. I don't know if this is exclusive to the RXS or an air cooled bike thing... ____________________ Riding: BMW R1150RT `02 bought mildly crashed

I'm not so sure, topped out the CBR once or twice
Not bothered about the speed though, it's a given to me that a 100cc bike will be comparatively slow, even a restricted 50cc would be preferable to the train though! ____________________ I am a bellend, I am a man of constant sorrow, I am a gummy bear, I am a rock. |
