Too big for a girl!

I posted last week about how I had lost my nerve after dropping my Varadero 125. Since then I have been too cowardly to go out on it.

Today I asked my neighbour if he would help me practise picking the bike up so that at least if I dropped it again, I would be able to pick it up. He looked at the bike and said 'That bike is too big for a girl'. (I'm 5' 9" and no fly-weight...).

Red rag.

Have just got back from taking it out on my own. I didn't go very far, but I DIDN'T DROP IT!

So sexist chap from the middle ages succeeds when all the lovely people in the 21st century didn't. In spite of this, PLEASE DON'T STOP BEING NICE TO ME. x

No bike is too heavy.

Some guys are about your height, and they ride bigger bikes. If you drop it, I'm sure someone would get out of their cager and help you pick it up, or another fellow biker.

Heck, if you have a pony tail hanging out the back of the helmet, everyone will help you.

My 125 is only 120kg dry (150kg for the Varadero) and I have never dropped it and it's light enough that I call pull the back end around with one arm when moving it but bigger class bikes look so heavy to me that I'm wondering how I will be able to handle them.

I notice that it takes usually 3/4 stewards to pick up a motogp bike when they crash and apparently these only weigh about 150kg. How do people find picking up 200kg bikes and do you find that one leg can take all the weight of the bike easily?

If you drop your bike and you can't pick it up, get someone to help.

Trick is not to drop it in the first place. It really shouldn't be a common occurrence so there's no point worrying about it.

I've dropped many a bike, you shouldn't let it stop you from learning to ride! What's the worst that can happen, so it gets a bit dented and you might have to ask a stranger for help.

I once asked an old granny to help after I dropped the bike, I was shocked at how strong she was. Couldn't have done it without her.

And I still ride the ER-6 in question, dents and all. It's a right mess it is, but it just adds to my mystique.

So is your neighbour suggesting that a Varadero is also too big for a dude who is of a similar size to you? Bet he doesn't ride!

Comments like that just make me laugh, no bike is too big for anyone and picking them back up is all about finding the knack. There are plenty of how-to guides on YouTube to show you glad to hear you went out on the bike again!

I nearly dropped mine today, I was turning right from a standstill and I stalled while leaning.

I seemed to have some super human strength to get it back upright while still on it. Did it, and made the car stop...and looked a tit.
