I posted last week about how I had lost my nerve after dropping my Varadero 125. Since then I have been too cowardly to go out on it.

Today I asked my neighbour if he would help me practise picking the bike up so that at least if I dropped it again, I would be able to pick it up. He looked at the bike and said 'That bike is too big for a girl'. (I'm 5' 9" and no fly-weight...).

Red rag.
Bull.

Have just got back from taking it out on my own. I didn't go very far, but I DIDN'T DROP IT!

So sexist chap from the middle ages succeeds when all the lovely people in the 21st century didn't. In spite of this, PLEASE DON'T STOP BEING NICE TO ME. x

You just needed a different kind of motivation Smile Glad you're back in the saddle. Next time you see your neighbour park the bike on his toe.

No bike is too heavy.

Some guys are about your height, and they ride bigger bikes. If you drop it, I'm sure someone would get out of their cager and help you pick it up, or another fellow biker.

Heck, if you have a pony tail hanging out the back of the helmet, everyone will help you. Thumbs Up

My 125 is only 120kg dry (150kg for the Varadero) and I have never dropped it and it's light enough that I call pull the back end around with one arm when moving it but bigger class bikes look so heavy to me that I'm wondering how I will be able to handle them.

I notice that it takes usually 3/4 stewards to pick up a motogp bike when they crash and apparently these only weigh about 150kg. How do people find picking up 200kg bikes and do you find that one leg can take all the weight of the bike easily?

This had been posted before. She's only small and picking up a Harley.

If your old and have arthritic or shot knees it might be a problem (or painful) or maybe if there's a ditch or the ground falls away on the side you're supposed to be standing.

That bike is probably easier to pick up than a Varadero because of the pivoting point on it.
A 125 will fall over, and the wheels will almost still be on the floor.
That Harley has a pivot point about 1/3 up the bike, so you can "rock" it back onto it's wheels, and already be half way to having it standing up.

Getting a skinnier bike, or a sportsbike back up, is almost like a deadlift using the seat/tank/bars.
You'd certainly not manage it using that technique.

Thanks everyone. Smile

If I have time between doing the ironing, making myself look pretty and playing with lovely kittens, I'll go for a longer spin early tomorrow morning. Smile

In the meantime, do have a look at this important information film: Thank heavens I watched it!

If you drop your bike and you can't pick it up, get someone to help.

Trick is not to drop it in the first place. It really shouldn't be a common occurrence so there's no point worrying about it.

probably because no one wants to be responsible for causing further damage by accidentally dropping it again.

if i was told to go pick up a moto GP bike i sure as hell would get some help. someone else to blame if you loose your grip and it goes down again Laughing

I've dropped many a bike, you shouldn't let it stop you from learning to ride! What's the worst that can happen, so it gets a bit dented and you might have to ask a stranger for help.

I once asked an old granny to help after I dropped the bike, I was shocked at how strong she was. Couldn't have done it without her.

And I still ride the ER-6 in question, dents and all. It's a right mess it is, but it just adds to my mystique. Wink

So is your neighbour suggesting that a Varadero is also too big for a dude who is of a similar size to you? Bet he doesn't ride!

Comments like that just make me laugh, no bike is too big for anyone and picking them back up is all about finding the knack. There are plenty of how-to guides on YouTube to show you Smile glad to hear you went out on the bike again!

I nearly dropped mine today, I was turning right from a standstill and I stalled while leaning.

I seemed to have some super human strength to get it back upright while still on it. Did it, and made the car stop...and looked a tit.
