About a year or so ago, I was stopped when carrying a fishing rod on my old bike with a mate whilst doing 50 in a 30. They said about the speeding but no fine and didn't even mention the rods, was a sound guy!

Now on this bike, the rods seem to stick out a bit further. If I take smaller rods I stick them down my jacket but beachcasters hang out too far.

I had them mounted on my bike the other day and did think about how far they stick out but didn't think too much of it. A mate does rowing and his boat sticks off the roof of his car further than the rods do. When I was on a ferry, someone said I was lucky not to get pulled.

So what are the rules & regs on carrying larger items (like fishing rods)?

Carried a few long items but usual items if they sit across the seat are not wider than the panniers.

Carried a long item, some of those flexi poles for pushing wires and sorting drains. Put these in a tube along the length of the bike sticking out at the back. Actually tied a bright bike muff (neck thingy) to the end for dozy car drivers.

When I did do archery I actually got a two piece longbow and was looking at fixing something like a map or guttering tube to the bike to carry it vertically. Wanted it enclosed so didn't bend. I liked the idea of the map tube as it was extendible and came with end caps. Did not want it along the length of the bike because it might get more damaged. Couldn't get a mounting system though (those with more metal bashing skills will not have this issue). Not sure I could have coped with a one piece longbow though although it would have been interesting with a flag on the top.

Thumbs Up

As mentioned, a map tube or similar usually along the length of the bike, with a bright cloth over the end if it protrudes.

I was in a similar position some time ago, until I eventually got a couple of telescopic fishing rods.

They shouldn't stick out sideways of the vehicle (including bike)by more than 305mm (measured from the widest point of the vehicle).
Lengthwise you're fine up to 3.05m sticking out the back but over 1m it's got to be visibly marked i.e.
Quote:
4. A projection shall be rendered clearly visible to other persons using the road within a reasonable distance, in the case of a forward projection, from the front thereof or, in the case of a rearward projection, from the rear thereof and, in either case, from either side thereof.

There are various exceptions etc but that's the basics, although carrying a 10' length out the back of a bike is legal it's stupid and would leave you open to committing other offences- dangerous load etc. A few feet overhang suitably draped with visible markers should be fine.

I've carried various bows on motorbikes. It's not difficult. Admittedly, the longbow was entertaining, but if it's a recurve bow, you can usually break them down into their constituent parts.
As for the fishing rod, can it not be dismantled?

So if you have it projecting forward it'd be like a lance then Thinking
Some interesting possibilities. I think the young Henry VIII would have approved Wink Very Happy

I was in a similar situation to yourself. I did what a couple of the guys have suggested, and mounted a section of fishing pole tube to the crash bars on my bike, it works perfectly! The hardest part is finding a decent mounting point...

Edit - problem and solution pics...: https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=2940394&highlight=#2940394

Cheers,

Jack

Well the rod is in two bits, but it protrudes about 2-3'. Will find a safety jacket to dangle on the back. As long as its legal, don't mind it being stupid Laughing

I do archery. You can get a special archery rucksack to stick it all in. They have a tube sticking out the top that i stick my long stuff in.

I also used the bag to hold my fishing rod. Its quite tall and stayed secure perfectly, i suggest you look around for something simular.

OCS did an episode where they mounted a snowboard to a rack.

Could do that with you beach caster n put a camp flag on top for humorous purposes

I saw two guys on a bike once heading towards Putney from Mitcham. The pillion was holding an aluminium extending ladder under his arm.
