Well, since I'm probably not going to be able to buy a new exhaust for my er5 anytime soon, is it possible to spray the downpipes black, to their original colour?

My bikes not got a huge amount of rust, more or less just surface corrosion, nothing deep, bu thow would I go about doing it.

Anyone got any advice on doing ti, what to buy and what to do?

Thanks in advance Thumbs Up Smile

Before you spray them, make sure they are as clean as you can get them. Remove them from the bike before you spray them otherwise you'll be cleaning paint from everything else!!
Oh and be certain you want to spray them black before you do it, as you won't be able to clean it off once done!

Get some wet and dry paper and just smooth them down a bit to get the rust off. Get some BBQ spray paint from B&Q and paint them with that, easy. Thumbs Up

What a great idea Thumbs Up I bet that stuff is cheaper than the special heat proof paint you can get from somewhere like Halfrauds.

I used a £6 can of that this evening, managed to spray about 4 square meters before it ran out...pathetic!

I tried the Plastikote BBQ paint, and the Wilkinson own brand stuff (as it claimed heat resistance of about 100C higher), and although they both gave a very similar finish I'd definitely recommend the Plastikote stuff as being a fair bit more chip and scratch resistant. Just really make sure things are clean and as rust free as possible I guess.
Cheers,
Rich

Halfords do a tub of rust remover (it's a green gunge). I bought it after Korn recommended it. Did the job great. Then sand them down as much as you can then apply autosol once they're rust free to get them shiney! Thumbs Up

Matt black stove enamel. Slap it on, leave 'till tacky. Run the bike to cure it. Stinks like hell.

I used some bbq paint (brush on) from focus diy. Cleaned exhaust with a wire wheel on a drill, cleaned with a degreaser and painted it on. About 6 coats!!!! hehe, looks great and has lasted so far. Stove enamel sounds good though-probably tougher as far as chips are concerned

Ah the old problems of rusted downpipes on an ER-5.

They all rust no matter how well you look after your bike, but when I owned my ER-5 I got some high temp paint and painted them using that.
Problem is the exhausts on the ER-5 is so dodgy the rust will come back within a few months!

If you were to replace the exhaust I can highly recommend the Motad Nexxus, (which is about £250 complete) its fully stainless steel so you won't get that problem with it.

Hope that helps,

Craig. Smile

Instigator, you'll probably run into Mark (Acidburnz) on one of the next rideouts. His ER-5 has the full Remus system on it. Sounds great! Thumbs Up Stainless steel pipes too, so no rusting. Not sure how much he paid. I'm sure it was around the £400 mark though.

Trouble is. All japanese mild steel exhaust systems rot from the inside. You can paint them as much as you want, they will eventually dissolve into a pile of flaky bits. Epecially the collector box. The only ones that don't are on bikes that are burning shitloads of oil.

I stripped my ts 50 x down recently and there was a lot of rust, i got a wire brush for my drill and used that, got it up nice and shiny then i used this heatproof spray called firecote, it looks very smart now. Not saying thats the best way but its how id id it and it came out pretty nice.

good luck with it

Sorry to butt-in on your thread instigator, but me question is similar, and no point making 2 threads.

Anyway, my Prost exhaust is rusty-looking. Its all surface rust, which I can clean off easily.
I acutally have an exhaust cover, which is being ordered by a Peugeot garage, but it may take some time.

Is it possible to paint the actual exhaust, or would the paint melt?

I know this is dragging up an old thread blah blah blah etc etc......
I want to spray my downpipes, Could I use just normal hamerite? The stuff you can spray onto rust rather than scrubbing the pipes down for ages?
