Go to get my bike out last night, all kitted up and ready to go. Press the button as I usually do to disarm the alarm, no response. Moved the fob closer, took the seat off and put it right next to the alarm and still nothing. It's not responding to anythng, tried the spare fob. Nothing.

It happened the other day when I went to wheel the bike in to the garage. I pressed the button on the fob to disable the motion sensor but the alarm didn't respond. Came back down the next morning to use the bike... it was fine. Went over and disarmed it like normal, have used in a fair few times since with no problems.

Has anyone had anything like this before?

Reading on the net would suggest the fuse is gone, but it can't be if it happened the other day and I've used the bike since.

So any thoughts would be useful! Rather steer away from 'rip it out they are shit' if we can void it. I know they are, the one on my last bike caused me problems as well.

It happened to me a few times. You might need to 'realign' the fob. Press and hold down the two buttons at the same time until it makes an odd sort of high pitched buzz noise, then try pressing the normal arm and disarm button. I'm pretty sure that's how I used to do it.

It may be worth quickly googling the 'realign' instructions in case they aren't exact but that's the best I can remember off the top of my head.

Try the fuse anyway. If its the glass type with a fillament up the middle it may be bouncing about. Works one day not the next. My fridge bulb is doing this. Ill change it one day.

Unfortunately yes, it's a PITA

It's probably 'spiked' - here's how you go about unspiking it:
https://www.datatool.co.uk/pdfs/system3_ds.pdf

I spent a very unsavoury day stripping my old GPZ back because of a 'spike', which I've no idea what caused.

Datatool = fit for bin IMO Laughing

Sorry to say, but that's exactly what mine did a couple of times just before it expired on me completely. I was stuck away from home and had to tear it off.
I did rip off all the potting from the circuit board and ran a soldering iron over it to sweat all the joints, and it started working, but then I put it back in the casing and fitted it to the bike again - when it promptly stopped working. In the end I got to the stage where it would arm and disarm if you bent the circuit board slightly over a biro or something so I called it a bad job and binned it.

So me and my dad have had a play.

The bike is currently sitting with the ignition on and the alarm disarmed after it responded to disarming it (has responded a couple of times in an hour of pressing the fob lol) which I assume means the alarm can't be spiked?

I can't find the inline fuse though, isn't it meant to be easy to get to? Can someone point me as to where I am most likely to find it?

Also, is the antenna literally a wire? Or does it have a little thing on the end because I've found what looks like the receiver. It has two brown wires going to it though, and I thought that purple was the colour that datatool use. Will upload a pic soon, and its not the protective trigger switch before someone suggests that.

That's a magnetic reed switch to stop somebody removing the seat and tampering with the alarm. There will be another bit that looks almost identical but with no wire on your seat I assume. It will sit on top of that switch when the seat is placed back on the bike.

The alarm antenna is built-in usually. The fuse is usually a 15A push in type like this:

Thanks, that makes sense. However there is no 'other bit' but its possible that didn't get installed or something. Looks like when the alarm arm, it looks for the other bit and if its not there it doesn't include it or something.

So am I write in thinking the antenna for the alarm is a purple wire?

Would it be worth me trying to find this to see if it is causing a problems?

This on your D6 by any chance?

Mine had a fairly similar issue which was down to the + connection which runs to live being a little bit damaged and had started going a weird green/white powdery type colour at the joint.

Yes, the purple wire is the system antenna.

So I managed to get the alarm disarmed and the bike going, and it has been working ish over the last couple of days.

However still wasn't responding properly earlier though.

Is it likely that the circuit board is fried and if I change it for another one this would cure the problem?

Or is it worth still trying to trace the inline fuse and replacing that as a matter of course. I guess it could have come loose or something?

EDIT:

I also found out its a system 21 not a system 3 as the FZ6 already has an imob circuit.

It can't hurt to check and even replace the in-line fuse. If that doesn't work then I'd go with the unspiking instructions posted earlier by arry.

I'd also check all of the crimps/splices where the alarm is connected to the bike's loom - sometimes they can produce an intermittent fault too.

As far as I'm aware all Fazers etc. have a couple of block connectors for alarm wiring under the seat. You'll be able to tell by the multitude of black wires going into the connectors. I think there's about 9 wires across two or three connector blocks. Two of them will be 12V (one switched and one permanent), two will be for the indicators (left and right) and at least one will be ground.

Also, I just realised that the alarm fuse is more than likely amongst your other fuses. It won't be in an in-line fuse holder.

Thanks for that.

Any idea where the fuse for it will be located then if its not an inline job? I've had a look at the wiring diagram in the service manual and can't find anything.

Check your Datatool manual - it may be written in there. Failing that, trace the red wire from the alarm unit. Smile

On a system 3 that is actually a secondary tilt switch and there was a microswitch for the seat. Of course they may have changed them since I last fitted them as it was a fair few years ago. Thumbs Up

As I've found this is a system 21 now, from research it doesn't actually have an immobiliser circuit I believe. So theoritcally I should still be able to start the bike with the alarm armed.

To avoid looking like a donkey, I can unplug the siren, that's fine... But the indicators will still flash. Does anyone know how to stop them flashing so I can at least use the bike for the time being?

If I unplug the jumper block on the board (the one to de spike) and let the internal battery dscharge will thiis do the trick?

The fuses are under the pod on the right side below the seat. Remove the seat, remove the single allen bolt and pull the panel out. It's mounted on two tabs into rubber grommets.

Hmm I've never come across one of those. I never fitted the system 3 though, only the System 4 which is a much better alarm in my opinion.

I checked the manual, and there is no auxilary fuse or smilar lsted in the fuse box, but I will have a look anyway. I guuess that is the most likely place to find it, so thanks for that.

Did you read my last post about stopping the indcators flashing btw?

I've managed to source a brand new system 21 with 2 fobs (never used) for £35 so I wil change the board out and see if that cures it.

As its going to be my only form of transport its imperatiive it is reliable, which is why I bought the bike in the first place. Its also going to be parked not in the greatest of areas and that was one of the reasons I wanted one with an alarm, so knowing how to be able to still use the bike if the alarm causes me problems would be useful Thumbs Up.

Thanks for the helpp so far btw.

Just thought I would update this in case anyone ever had a similar problem.

I had another look today, with the siren removed (to stop the noise) and the bike would still start with no problems. As this is the system 21 it doesn't contain an immobiliser circuit like the system 3 as the imob system is a coded key and ecu on this bike.

It is indeed plug and play also.

The fuse was located in the right hand rear side panel as you suggested under 'back up'. I checked the installation certificate for the alarm and it told me where it was all along!

I then removed the circuit board completely and tried to start the bike and it starts with no problems at all, so if I ever have problems again I can still use the bike. I then replaced the circuit board with the one from the complete system I bought. Problem solved Very Happy.

Well for now anyway, but it seems to be responding like it used to. I also engaged silent mode so I don't have to listen to the bloody thing beep every time I disarm the alarm which is good Smile.

I've managed to set myself a PIN too. It was pretty easy to be fair ( the alarm can't be in silent mode to do this though, so maybe that was where you were going wrong pete?). I also practised disarming the bike with the PIN in-case for what ever reason I got stranded because the fob went flat etc.

All in all I'm happy with the result and hopefully it doesn't cause me any problems. If it does I'm less worried now though, so hopefully this information might be useful to someone else too.
