Hi guys,

I'm using an old desktop PC at the moment and I'm struggling to get it to play videos. It has 3 OS' installed, XP Professional, Linux Mint, and the latest Ubuntu.

When running XP I'm having issues with it playing video smoothly, the CPU doesn't seem able to hack it, even when running relatively low quality videos the CPU is up at 100% and it is jumpy to the point of un-watchable. This is using VLC, I haven't tried other media players.

When running Linux with the same video the picture is perfect and sharp, however I don't have any sound. It recognises the sound card fine, and in fact I'm sure to start with it was playing sound ok, I have no idea what I've changed but now I have no sound at all. I've checked all of the obvious stuff including checking for missing drivers. The picture is sharp in VLC and Banshee.

I haven't tried ubuntu with the video yet but I'll give that a go now, it didn't run very well when I downloaded it so I've pretty much ignored it is on here.

The film in question is in AVI format if it makes any difference

Linux sound issue: fire up a terminal and type alsamixer - then play with the settings. Google can tell you more about alsamixer but as a starter I would look at whether the selected sound card (press F6) has the oudio outputs turned up.

Tried the front headphone port and all channels of the surround sound card with no luck. Fairly sure it's not a hardware issue because it works fine on xp but could it help to shift the card over a slot in the motherboard? I'm guessing no since it seems to pick up the card fine.

Ok, gone into PulseAudio Volume Control on the Media menu, when fiddling with the settings I get the pop sound to show how loud it is set. No other sign of sound though.

alsamixer again (it really is the best way to sort this!)

F5 shows all available controls for the selected device. Move sideways with the arrow keys, bear in mind there may be more controls than you can see on the screen... In most of my experience it will be that a slider is slid down, muted or simply not selected. Smile

Definitely all up all of the way along, I do notice on the far right of the screenshot that there is nothing shown in the video bar, make a difference?

Have you tried playing the video with another player in linux? VLC would be a good start.

In the BIOS is there an option to disable the 'on board' or 'built in' audio?

Try changing the sound profile, under sound settings.

This is usually the issue with mine.

In Ubuntu there is the Sound Settings dialog (click the speaker volume icon in the top right to get to it):

Select the sound output there.

It now works?

If not boot it from a pen drive containing the latest version. If sound then works just do a clean install.
