 |

Good evening Ladies and Gents, I gotta little problem................
I've recently returned to the Biking fold but I'm now having trouble with my little 2 smoke commuter.
Problem is... With all the air filter side of the carb assembled, the bike when being riden won't rev past 5500 rpm above 2nd gear. I've stripped the carb numerous times and it's been clean every time. Same with the tank filter, the fuel feed line from the tank, the tap and the air filter is clean. The bike starts with no fuss every morning 1st kick and smoke clears soon after. After quarter mile the bike starts hesitating and then fails to rev out. I've tried it withe the fuel cap undone also with the baffles out (which I've cleaned out too).
So today I went to see the local Suzuki dealer and spoke to a guy whom used to work on them back in the day, and he pointed me to a breather off the carb. He said if it was bloke it would choke up and not rev out. So off I toddled to give it a go.... No not blocked so I thought I'd try it with the carb cover plate off, she went like stink ;0) So I just removed the air filter and refitted the carb cover plate, and she was just as before, gasping and not reving out. So this time I removed the rubber elbow between the air box and the engine case, and still she wouldn't rev out, although she was slightly better with top revs coming in at about 6500 rpm. So I removed the carb cover plate again and she was off, like a 98cc rocket ;0)
WHAT'S WRONG PLEASE???? Why won't she breath through the filter?
If you've read this far, thank you, you must have been very bored ;0) ____________________ I know it's small, but I'm sure it's what you do with it that counts ;0)

What do you mean by carb. cover plate? The crankcase cover on the right hand side of the engine?
So it runs fine with that off but not with it on?
Could it be pinching the fuel line/carb drain hose under the cover or restricting the movement of the choke, throttle cable or oil pump mechanism?
It's a slightly odd layout with it being crankcase induction and disc valve, a picture with the cover removed might be helpful because I certainly can't remember the exact layout.
Has it ever run properly since you've had it? ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Ok. There is normally a paper gasket round that cover plate (apparently suzuki call it an inspection cap). Is it missing making the cover sit closer to the carb inlet than it ought to?
I think this is unlikely to be causing a problem but worth a shot and is free to do, you could cut one out of a cornflakes packet. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

1. Get a Haynes manual for it. Mine came with one and it was a valuable piece of literature for these kind of situations, such as when I had to do a top end rebuild when the piston rings blew.
2. Make sure that the airbox is standard and that the air filter isn't causing any blockages.
3. Make sure that all the settings on the carb are set to the standard settings. If the airbox and filter are fine, it may be case of tweaking the needle settings on the carb.
Try these first and let us know if anything changes or improves. |
Yep, all standard, nothing blocked.
The bike was going well the first time I rode it, so I don't know how the settings could change, but I'll have a good look again.
Haynes now on order, I would have got one straight away if I'd know it was going to play up on the second day!!! ;0)
Will let you know how I get on tomorrow, thanks for your time. |
Well, I can conclusively state "I don't know!" All taken apart and reassembled, still the same.
I'm just going to wait until I get the Haynes book and compare the photo's. There must be a reason why the carb is so close to the cover.
So thanks for you help and I'll post again when I've had another go. ____________________ I know it's small, but I'm sure it's what you do with it that counts ;0)
