 |
|
As title.
Got any tips anyone?
I drained the oil and spent hours trying to get the fecker off, but it won't budge. In the end I had to give up and fill up with new oil as I needed the bike for transport the next morning.
My Dad suggested hammering a screwdriver through it and turning it that way - but he said sometimes that may not work and you're left with it stuck.
Help!

Hmm, I just spent the past 3 days tackling the same problem...
I tried the screwdriver method - didn't work. I also invested in 3 different tools - one of those boa-constrictor things (I already had one lying around, and have used it before for the same purpose), a universal filter wrench, and a filter "key" that matched the filter. None of those methods worked, so in the end, I just used a channellock (one of these https://ts.smoothcorp.com/cornerhardware/125028.299x299.jpeg ) and a bit of brute force. ____________________ TiN

chain wrenches are good for undoing, cos if it wont move, then the chain just munches into the filter and grips it that way
tightening with a chain wrench is slightly more dodgy cos of this, but if it starts to munch the filter, then its tight enough ____________________ So in other words, he stopped you for being flagrantly in posession of a motorcycle in direct contravention of the Hippies, Darkies and People Whose Face I Don't Like The Look of (Police Powers) Act. 1976 |

The problem with the hammer and screwdriver method is other than making a bloody mess if the filter is very tight the screwdriver will just rip the filter apart when you try to undo it.
Like others have suggested I always use the large adjustable plumbers type grips,I think thier proper name is waterpump pliers,I've never known a filter yet to argue with those things and thats including the really large oil filters on trucks which can be mega tight!
This is what I mean...
