Hi guys.

I was wondering if anyone here uses the inforad M1 speed camera location GPS and accident blackspot (mobile van) location device?

I am seriously considering fitting one to my bike.

I understand how it works as it goes off of its own database which you are required to update manually.

I was just wondering if there is anyone on here who have used it for an extended period of time and if it was worthwhile?

I understand that it couldn't be relied on fully, but if it saves just one ticket then it will definitely be worth it.

My question is, does it do the job it's supposed to do and without problems?

(i realise it doesn't detect anything and is a glorified map).

Thanks.

Ive had mine on for 4 years now, I like it. It has saved my ass a couple of times in unfamiliar areas.

i had one of the old ones.. worked great then suddenly the gps would never connect. when i swapped bikes i didnt bother putting it on my new one.

twas a nice bit of kit when it did work. keeps you updated with what speed limit you're in (green if under, red if over) and of course the speed camera blackspot notifications.

the route planner thing was a good addition when i updated the firmware, downloadable to a pc it could be put into google maps and show me exactly where id been. nice feature im sure the new one would have

Yup - good bits of kit

I have had issues with the antenna part cracking and letting in water and eventually drowning

Their aftersales service is I'd say is the best after sales service I have ever come across
emailed the invoice (as I had bought from Amazon rather than direct from them) and a replacement was with me the next day
No quibbles no dramas

I have mine now mounted witth the antenna UNDER the tail piece on my bike so it doesn't get exposed to direct UV/snow/ice/water
It has been just dandy since doing this and it still picks up sats in a couple of seconds

Logging feature works well enough - ditto for average and max speeds...makes for some interesting reading Shocked

See Kawakid's most excelent convertor so you can see the route you took (and hover over the traces to see what speeds you hit!!!)

Top bit of kit for the money I reckon

How does this thing work? Does it have a screen, or some lights?

In nutshell...

LED on a flexy stick and a "box" with a removable dongle
Only 2 wires to connect + and - (obvoiusly switched to ignition!)

It has sensibly long wires for the LED on a flexy stick, power and the antenna so it plenty of mounting options

Unit is rubber coated and seems pretty waterproof and plenty of mounting holes for zip ties

I would advise the antenna is not installed in direct UV or an area that gets wet when parked up (originally on the tail piece - it cracked the plastic housing- now under the tailpiece no such issues)

Operation is as simple as powering the unit up (once the databases have been updated - a 5 min job with no hidden costs and is pretty painless straightforward)

Flashing Green LED means aquiring sats/working out where on the planet it is (usually takes a couple of seconds to get a good fix)
Steady green means it know where it is

Red means your in a known camera area and under the limit

Red and flashing means you are in a known area and you are over the limit

Take the dongle off every now and again and its free to update the camera database or speed limits

In software you can also set it to trace/log rides and make adjustments to how soon before and after a known area you require the warning to get triggered / reset

Google Inforad M1 for pics and the tech specs

Regards
Rob

The only thing that bothers me about these is the definition of a "known camera area", is there really such a thing?! Do the police have rules or certain areas they're permitted to put mobile units? If not and they can stick a camera van where they like doesn't it render this piece of equipment useless?!

Someone fill me in

Look on the same page for the M1.

It's £19.99.

Also, if you wire it in, it will be permanently on unless you remove the fuse or wire in a switch.

Those that have them, do you have yours perma on or do you turn it off with a switch or fuse removal?

"Buy" the looks of the website (and original post) It's the M1 that's for bikes, £29.99 inc free delivery.

Edit - Whoops! The offer is £19.99. I better get on the phone!

I think water is more of an issue than having a 12v Aux socket.

Even if you can't get out of paying the extra tenner, I still think it's a good bit of kit. I've seen the same item being sold for silly money.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Datatool-Inforad-Speed-Camera-Location-Warning-Device-Highly-Visible-LED-/200764993825?pt=UK_Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Other_Vehicle_Parts_Accessories_ET&hash=item2ebe86b121

Perhaps the increase in sat nav use has decreased the demand for something like the inforad?

either wire it to your light circuit so its not on a permanent live or what i did was build a switchable live 'box of tricks' with a relay that switches a permanent live on when the ignitions on. this box of tricks had my heated grips, inforad, plus anything else i needed on it. a good pure live but turns off when you switch the bike off Smile

Sort of on-topic, out of interest does this work outside the UK.
If so is it a device that'll be banned by the French or is the French ban just on sat nav speed trap info?

Confused

It works in europe but it's illegal in France. Apparently it uses "mygpsworld" maps for speed camera locations. I don't know if the french cameras have been recorded to this database or not.

It was this video that made me consider getting one.
