Hi All,

On a slower ride today with a 125 doing some stop start riding though the town, while sitting at a set of traffic lights the bike got upto 104 degrees before we set off. When i got home i left the bike running for a min or 2 and the temp got to 101 degrees then i turned it off. Fan never kicked in at home.. Is this normal or should the fan have came on?

Thanks

Do you know where the Thermostat is & are their any pipes coming off it ?

If so run the bike up for say 5 Mins, leave it running for 2 minutes on idle then sit their at 3,000 For 1 minute then leave it for an extra 2 minutes, while doing this keep an eye on the bike's temp guage and make sure it does not go above 105.

Fell pipe coming off thermo is it hot or cold ?

Also before you do all of this take some basic steps and make sure everything is connected properly and no wires are disconnected or frayed or part broken.

Well I just went out and checked it and all the pipes felt hot. It got to about 105 then the fan kicked in and took it to about 98 then turned off. Still seems a little hot I think. Not 100% sure where the thermostat is, would have to consult the manual.

It's cooling system is working then just not correctly,

you say it cut in 105, look in a haynes manual or online manual for the correct fan cut in time.

If it's out it's proberly a faulty tempreture sensor Thumbs Up

104 degrees is fine on a hot day in traffic.

Sounds very similar to my cbr - fan comes on at about 105 then takes it down to 98 or so when standing still.

Doesn't concern me though.

EDIT: Just found this topic on some yank forums:

Thanks for the advice guys. Might flush the cooling system just to be on safe side.

Another vote for it being normal, my bike gets to 103, fan kicks in, temp climbs slowly to 105 then drops to 98, fan off and repeat.

Flushing the system is always a good idea if you don't know when it was last done, like brake fluid it's supposed to be done every 2 years.

Remember that a pressurized cooling system will NOT boil at 100, more like 120 because the pressure stops gas bubbles forming... Take the pressure cap off with it at 105 and the lot will boil instantly, so don't do that, ever!

Oh right I didn't know that. Thought it may have been boiling at 100!

Thanks for the advice Karma

+1 for normality.

My ZX6R gets to 102 then the fan kicks in and drags it down.

The whole point of coolant is to raise the boiling point above 100c. Start worrying when it gets to ~115/120 - that's the point when it'll start to cause problems. The fan should be kicking in at around 100c.

Nope, pressurizing the coolant system raises the boiling point.

Coolant simply assists the water in absorbing the heat from the engine and prevents oxidisation in the coolant system.

I did get worried when I seen the temp at 103 thinking the water would have boiled but checking the level and it's still at max when the engine was cold so im less worried about it now. Still going to change it since I have a week off.

Fair enough. The point remains that there's nothing to worry about at 100C, though.
