Well, the kickstart mechanism. I seem to remember when we put mine back together it was doing this, but its been a fair while and I cant remember exactly what it was. I think maybe the return spring had slipped from its correct position and moved around the shaft. Don't think it was a major job to sort, but then nothing really is on an MZ!
Marjay is right about the kickstart going through the clutch, so that may be contributing too.

There is a definate knack to them.
Most people try to kick them too hard, just tickle it over, you're not trying to make the piston fly out of the top of the engine. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |

On my 301 if you didn't give it any welly it would kick back and take out your shins. It wasn't a "Kicking over an old brit twin" kick, but it definitely needed a firm and decisive swing. |
Yes, but we're talking about a 125 here. |
And a compression level designed to allow running on paraffin/lighter fluid/gravy...
Still wince thinking about the bruise on my calf muscle from the foot-slip-kickback on my 301 though.

Wouldnt start yesterday after work so did a crappy video on the iphone. Excuse the havey breathing, had been trying for a while....
When it did start up i went out for a couple of hours to give it a run, but this morning it didnt wanna know so i ended up in the car.
When kicking, its usually the end part of it that fires the bike up when it feels like it but it doesnt feel like theres anything there. If i take the side panel off will i see what should be there? Im guessing a spring?

The design is different from the 301, so I can't help directly. It sounds like there are "teeth" inside trying to grip, but they're worn so just slipping past. I'd get a Haynes manual and examine the kickstart mechanism, and then contact Burwins about parts (which will probably be absurdly cheap).
