Sorry if this is for some is a very basic question.

Other than using chrome cleaner regularly is there any long term fix for protecting chrome parts?

I was considering lacquering chrome parts?

P.S. This is not for chrome parts on the engine of course.

Ive used chrome wax in the past to put a nice protective layer on, tried WD40 but that seemed to not last long.

Something like this

I know about ACF 50 but you keep having to reapply it same with a wax.

I wanted a fixed long term solution other than stainless steel (which I can't do everything with unfortunately).

I know people lacquer polished aluminium to keep it from losing its shine.

Surely this can be applied to chrome?

The ironic thing is. Chrome doesn't rust, that's why they put it on.

It's the steel underneath the chrome that rusts and it only shows through when there is a hole in the chrome.

Yes, you can lacquer chrome.

A couple of times a year, it's hardly a huge effort. How are you planning to protect the non chrome bits? Buy a litre bottle, quick spray and wipe whenever you can be bothered, it'll last you for years.

Very true.

Everything that can be is stainless steel or aluminium, non-stainless parts are powdercoated or painted. I've already given too much attention to my bike and it really saps my time, I always ACF before winter but I really prefer minimum cosmetic maintenance.

And it holds / Protects against rust?

I bet vinyl wrap would stick to degreased chrome like shit to a blanket.

You could even use chrome effect vinyl.

Is this actually serious?

Not sure it would give the desired effect.

Whats the problem with just lacquering certain smaller chromed parts?

Lacquer can chip, after all it's just a pigment-free paint, but it holds. Chrome doesn't rust so I'm not totally sure of the point though.

No problem at all, it just serves no purpose.

Yes, Vaseline is oil based and doesn't wash off.

People also use it on battery terminals as well as the other obvious uses. Laughing

Well anyone who has seen old chrome parts will know that they do rust and pit.

Maybe the chrome itself doesn't but there is actually a very fine content of chrome in chromed parts and it is more dependent on the thickness of the nickel and in a good job copper below it.

So the point is does lacquering provide any future protection against rust?

There is a reason people with classic bikes like to go stainless, like I am doing but some parts are prohibitively expensive to do so.

Just keep it clean. I don't use abrasive cleaners on chrome, just window cleaner.
This bike is 26 years old and was used pretty much daily. Virtually all of the major parts are original.
https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/xv1000/PICT1740c.jpg

The fork lowers were polished alloy without any coating, just wiped with ethanol to stop them corroding.

There are only three problems with corrosion on chromed parts that I am aware of on bikes. Abrasive cleaning removing the coating, rotting from the inside out and micro fractures. All of these can be significantly reduced with regular cleaning using the right stuff.

The best you can do to protect the chrome would be a clear plastic coating.

+1 for symonh2000 suggestion.

When I bought my GZ, the previous owner had caked the chrome in Vaseline. It worked really well over winter.
The proof is in when you try and take the bugger off the chrome, it takes ages..........
