Its getting late in the year and there's a danger my Mod1 and 2 could get split over the Jan 19th date for the new EU directive. What kind of licence would I get if I take my tests on my 125. I'm 45 by the way.

Cheers

I can't see a reason why you'd get anything other than a joke A1 license.

However, you'd get a more official lie if you asked the DSA. Wink

Don't let it come to that, eh?

I wouldn't risk it, start being prepared to travel and look for cancellation dates, I would get booking the Mod 1 now and having a go at it for the sake of £15.

That leave 3 months to find a mod 2 slot.

I was just wondering this myself. I've a birthday at the end of the month so should get enough money for my theory and Mod 1 but with Christmas coming I can't afford to get my Mod 2 until jan-feb time.

If you get an answer from DSA, can you post it here please?

If you're on a 125cc then I'd imagine you'll be stuck on one forever unless you retake them both again on a bigger bike.

Like others have said, don't let it come to that, book early and if you have to wag time off work to get one in then do it, cos it'll cost a lot more having to re-do all your tests again to get access to a bigger bike.

The official line is this:

Rules for riding tests from 19 January 2013

"You'll get a licence for the sub-category of motorcycle that you use for your module 2 test if you pass.

You're in my situation - I took mod1 on a 125 so have to follow suit with mod2. Get the tests done by Jan and your 125 restriction will lapse after 2 years.

Iim still confused. I think there's a real danger I will not ge both tests done by Jan 19th, so does that mean restricted to 47bhp for ever or until do both tests again but on a 500cc bike.

No, from what I gather you'll be restricted to a 125 for ever if you pass on a 125 Sad

This thread might clear things up (there are a few discussions like this if you search).

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=256010

In a few words, after Jan the bike you are tested on is the size you're limited to for ever, unless you take another test on a bigger bike - with all the hassle that brings!

There's still 3 months left to get both tests done and dusted....absolutely PLENTY of time. Remember that you get a lot of mod2 cancellations, so its very possible that you could pass Mod1 then get a mod2 slot just days later.

When is your theory test?

If its not till end of October then I still think there's time. BUT you need to use this time wisely....get researching the Mod1, watch videos, get the layout, get some cones and practice practice practice in a car park somewhere.....do it as much as you can. By the time you pass your theory test you'll be ready for mod1....you may have a 4 week wait, but will deff be in by end of November....also, book your mod2 at the same time, do it for a week after your mod1. If you breeze the Mod1 then your mod2 will be start of December, giving you a month if you happen to fail one of them .

Can still be done, but needs effort and a bit of dedication to it for 2 months.

Just move to the Isle of Man

You can pass your test (none of this mod 1 & 2 stuff) on a 125 and then buy any bike you like. You just have to have an R plate and keep it under 50mph for a year (like I even do that now Shifty )

The only down side is, most of the roads are shite and you can't ride far before you have to turn around and come back. Unless you have a submarine/bike hybrid.

My theory is on the 16th of Oct and was going to book Mod1 as soon as I pass the theory.

I'm my own victim of being too relaxed about the whole business. I should have researched what all the fuss about the tests was earlier in the year.

If you do pass yor tests after 19th of Jan do you have to wait a whole two years to take the tests again on a more powerfull machine? Or take the tests anytime?

If you passed tests on 125 post Jan 19 and got an A1 only licence, then there is a qualifying period of two years before you can take tests for A2....

By rogers interpretation of what looks like they have slipped through onto the statute books.... I'm still trying to de-cypher.....

There's no caveot that prevents direct access to A2, and Direct access to A3 is retained.

So in THEORY, if you are over age of eligibility, you might be able to re-test at any time to upgrade, without waiting qualifying period, either to A2 if over 19 or to A3 if over 24..... But dont quote me!

Think the hinge-pin is whether they get this 'upgrade by training' idea off the ground, in which case single testing, and doing a suped up CBT on a bigger bike to upgrade to it, you'd probably have to wait out teh full two year qual-period... or double/tripple test.

Tef: so things are not yet set in stone? The licencing athority may have other options based around training requirments rather than just tests?

Personally I think it would be better if they had a single test taken on a 125 but then restricted until you can prove you have done a certain number of hours/sessions of training on a larger bike with an approved instructor.
