Hi, just wondering if anyone could suggest the best/easiest way of removing a dent, possibly a suction cup type method maybe? Never tried it before. the dent it self is about 2-3 inches in diameter on a vfr 400 nc30. Thanks. Thumbs Up

You could try pressurising it with an airline through a rubber bung.

Would have thought that if the pressure was great enough to pop out a dent, it would also be powerful enough to deform the tank where you didn't want it to! Compressed air and fuel vapour? Don't blow yourself up Exclamation

My friend did the compressed air and rubber bung trick. The tank went with a bang. Try at your peril.

Suction cup is the best idea.

Plug both holes and fill it up with water then put it in your freezer over night will remove all imperfections

Why would it? A little bit of finesse goes a long way.

It is important to understand how deep / sharp the dent is.
If it is a half decent dent then it will need to be knocked out or pulled.

like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjOjYvT0jEU

Posting an idea that you read on the internet is retarded.

The thickness of a tank wall means the ideas that others have copied and pasted are unlikely to work.
Air pressure will deform the tank before it forces the dent out.
A sucker will not work.
Freezing? Just lol!

Are you saying my idea wouldn't work? I've done it too many times and it's the easiest way. Also works on exhausts.

Sure. I've seen air pressure remove dents with my own eyes.

I don't doubt that airpressure *could* remove a dent, it's just that I think it would deform the tank elsewhere, before it popped the dent out. Depends on the shape of the tank really.

Soft impacts yes, sharp damage no.

Water expands equally in all directions. How does the freezing differentiate(?) between a dent and a formed surface or a weak joint? How does it cope with stretching? Removing imperfections is different, I've completely removed small soft dents from panels simply by hitting a different part of the panel.

Please show me how this works because I would be really interested, it could save me a lot of time.

This is damage.

Well the paint is shit so it can be removed. Then either drill a hole and pull the dent out using it, or weld a rod on and pull it using that.
There is also a dry ice method that works on shallow dents. It works by contracting one specific area of metal. So if you put the tank in the oven on full blast then use dry ice on the dent. 225c, -80c is quite a temp difference and should give some big results.

I'd already done it Laughing

No air, no ice, no suckers, no filler just a couple of bars, hammers and a file.

The hammers and bars were distributed to his pikey mates who aided him in mugging the tank of the bike of some 17 year old who didn't look like he could handle himself.
