I thought I would post a pic of the reason my bike (GPZ600R) recently broke down. Drained almost a litre and a half of water/rust out of the tank Confused

how does this collect without going into the engine?

if it is due to the small filter at the fuel tap, why wasn't that clogged beyond function about 20 years ago?

i've always heard about crud in petrol tanks, but that is something else. is it all rust yeah?

it did get into my carbs when I had to switch to reserve, thats when I broke down lol. I assumed I was out of fuel so put more in and still wouldn't start. I somehow managed to crawl home using the choke as a throttle and drained the carbs. It was so bad in the end I had to remove the tank and empty it. I managed to salvage most of the fuel as the water sits under it Very Happy I then had to remove the carbs and spend a fair while cleaning the crud out of them. I wish I had took a pic of the carbs now as they were full of shit, I'm amazed it ran at all Laughing This bike has been a real learning curve for me having to do most the repairs myself. Gone from not a clue, to being able to fix most things myself now Thumbs Up

+10 man points for leaving a jug of petrol next to a live plug socket Laughing

Honestly if that is all rust i'm surprised that fuel tank still holds the stuff without leaking.

That is some serious rust!

I'd dry it out and keep it, handy iron oxide powder, fireworks or something surely? Wink

Its really not that bad inside now. Tanks rust more when they are empty and the oxygen can get to the metal. I have heard sealing can cause more harm than good in some cases.

Someone told me that for every 5 mil of rust there is only 1 mil of actual corrosion so rust always looks worse than it is.

Not sure how true that is, but even so.......fuck me Surprised Thars some rot there.

What bike is that? Only way I can think that you can get that much water in the tank, unless it came out of the pump, is if your filler cap well drain is blocked. Rainwater would then fill up the well and get past the seal into the tank.

Its a GPZ600R and had been stood for 2 years so I guess the water in tank just built up over that time. I have had no issues with it since Cool
