Used RS without a doubt. It's way cheaper than a YZF-R125, much faster, shed loads of parts about, and fairly simple to fix and maintain. KTMs seem to have fairly unreliable engines from all accounts so I'd only really consider them for Saturday entertainment, preferably with a van to take it home! The other big problem with KTM is that every chav within 20 miles will decide that they want to steal it. There's something about that bike that chavs just seem to be draw to stealing them! Perhaps it's because so many chavs also own that type of bike? If it doesn't get nicked I'll be amazed. I'd guess you'll get pretty heavy police attention with it too, so make sure it's insured, taxed etc.

Whats wrong with the two stroke sound of an RS? The R125 looks like a scaled down R6 and sounds like a souped up CG.

In any case, don't waste much more than 2k on whatever you choose, save it for a proper bike.

You aren't 17 for nearly a year... Think about what bike to get when you have a hope of riding it.

You couldn't legally ride either the Aprillia RS125, nor the KTM until you were 19, and then, only after passing tests and holding A1 licence 2 years, then taking A2 test on a 500 to gain licence for them.
RS125 exceeds the power allowed by Learner-Legal / A1 licence entitlement
KTM exceeds the power and the power to weight limit allowed by Learner-Legal / A1 licence entitlement,m posibly even power to weight ratio for A2 licence meaning another two years and an A3 test to get licence to ride it!

You may, ride a standard YZF-R125 on L-s or A1 licence..... in just under a years time, when you are old enough....... but 70mph for four and a half grand or as much as a brand new YBR second hand?
Personally, I'd buy a boring as buggery YBR, and enjoy at least saving money while going slowly and learning to handle ANYTHING with more power than a lawn-mower.

Your 16, you have almost eight months before you can even dream of any of these bikes though, and yeah.... you might have 3 months experience of a 50..... at best, and almost no idea what its like to ride any bike legally on the road, YET.... you have ideas that you HAVE to have one that's 'fast' more, faster than you are legally allowed on licence you will be entitled to in umpety months, and that is STILL faster than maximum legal speed limits in this country..... for ANY sized bike......

All I can say is, you have a LOT to learn!

Learn to ride a bike, of ANY speed or performance before starting to complain that something your not allowed right now is not enough and you have to have something your also not allowed!?!?!?

And if you DGAS about riding legally, who teh fuck are you trying to kid limiting yourself to illegal 125's? May as well get a ZX6R for under a grand and be hung for a sheep as a lamb, with some real high-speed high performance on tap, rather than just a dribble!

I GOT THE YAMAHA!!! Very Happy Mr. Green . I'm 17 so that was my only option, sex on wheels. It took me around 6-7 months of saving but when ever i see it in the morning it leaves a nice warm feeling in my heart.
Also as i live in a big city like london keeping up with bigger bikes on semi congested roads aint that hard as well.

Taking the above into account if you have the funds to purchase the yamaha straight away PURCHASE IT NOW!!, but don't mess around spending weeks like i did roaming from gumtree and ebay. As JAN 2013 is around the corner, i had the luxury of time so i could but i wouldn't advise you doing the same.

Indicated 80 or real 80? Indicated 80 is probably more like 74mph.

At the risk of sounding underinformed, why isn't anyone mentioning the CBF125? I've found it a very nice little bike, easy to handle, and quite a big-bike feeling for a novice like me. Not too much power, but enough to get up to 65 on NSL DCs if you need to.

Because that would be a serious answer to a fantasy question. OP is just another 16 year old playing Fantasy Bike Shopping and it's not worthwhile investing time in any answer beyond:

Do you want a bike for posers and be too afraid to push it because you most probably WILL lowside at some point... Or a rs 125 and provided you have the slightiest bit of common sense and actually learn how to do simple jobs like a rebuild will be a realiable cheap bike. Not sure why you think two stroke is expensive...the yamaha will cost you an extra 1-2 grand.

What are you riding at the moment? A bored 50 will have more power then a yamaha.

Mike; as ever, I should point out the whole 'illegal' thing never stopped you.

And the reality is you're significantly less likely to get caught and prosecuted for riding a de-restricted 125cc bike than a 600cc without a licence. Further, it would seem you're likely to get a much lower penalty if you do.

Why only do 75mph on a motorway when it's also illegal to do 150mph?

Please enlighten me as to why any person with a single personality would put a 125cc sports bike and a 125cc competition enduro bike both on their short list of 125's?

Your not going to be taking the RS125 on a green lane or the KTM onto a track day etc?

Maybe your just very confused or i am missing some extremely logical point, but if you cannot decide on braodly what type of bike and it's designed useage in mind to begin with, then how the hell do you make a shortlist?

It doesn't really matter, a YBR can still reach 60-65, and you won't be doing that very often anyway. Why does acceleration matter? I don't think many people need an impressive 0-60 time on the road anyway, but any 125 will keep up with traffic.

IMO Yamaha's are shitty chav bikes that fall apart. This guy pretty much ruined any desirability for the R6...
