Can some one clear this up for me? I've heard and read so maybe didn't changes to the test for next year I'm a little confused. Hopefully the old man will take his test next year and he asked me whats changing but I didn't know what to tell him I did my test in 2007 before mod1 etc.

So what's the 'official' wording on the changes?

Thanks

Well if the 'old man' is over 24, then not much has changed for him, he will just do it on a 600cc bike instead of 500cc.

If he is below 24, then he would only be able to get a restricted license for machines of a specific size/power, depending on his age, and any restricted license obtained will NOT be upgraded automatically after 2 years like it does now.

A lot of information here:

Just saw this...

Quote:
The new rules will affect you if you pass your test after this date, or you apply to renew or replace your driving licence.

What the hell? What do they mean by renew or replace your licence Laughing

If you already have motorcycle entitlement, it won't change under the new rules. However, if you want to ride bigger bikes, you'll need to follow the rules for new riders below.

Well I'm over 24 so that'll give you a rough idea of his age Laughing

Thanks for the link by the way! Very helpful.

Ive been reading the law on trikes from the link. Father currently has a car driving licence since 87. Do the new rules mean he will have to pass a test to ride a trike? I was always led to believe he could ride one on a car licence?

Thanks

I do keep seeing people giving out false advice regarding next years changes.

I keep seeing "if you're over 24 then it doesn't affect you at all", this is totally incorrect......as from next year, if youre in the older age bracket and take your test on your 125, then you are stuck forever on a 125 unless you retake the tests again on a bigger bike.

So no more restricted 2 year licence if you do your test on a 125.

What about Mod1/Mod2 etc? Is all that staying the same?

Yes. You will still be able sit the test(s) on a 125, but all that does is get you a license to ride the same 125 (without the Learner restrictions).

The are no planned changes that I'm aware of (except for the bikes used).

There's a "test review" currently in progress that's looking at the possibility of getting back to a single test (all done on road), but my personal belief is that it'll die in committee. Don't bet on anything changing.

Thanks for clearing that up Karma some did mention about it going back to a single test but I hadn't heard any think on it.

What about the rules regarding trike licences from the link above? Could he ride a trike on his car licence?

Sorry, you are right. I am always running under the assumption that with the 2013 rules, if you are over 24, there will be no logical reason why you would choose to take the bike tests on a 125, rather than go for the big bikes, seeing as license upgrading will cease.

But yes, for those 24+ who only ever want to ride 125, it must be said that if you take the test on a 125, you're stuck with it.

I think for riders over 24 it basicaly means your going to have to do a DAS course eventualy (unless your happy for ever with just 125) rather than waste money on doing tests on a 125. So if like me your using a 125 to get experience when you feel confident to do tests your going to have to go to a school to use their 600cc bike and get an A (unlimited) licence, after jan 19 all you get for your test fees is dropping the L plates.

I'm going to have a bash at the tests on my own on my 125. If I fail I'm just going to stick with the L's for a year save up the money and do DAS. It all adds up the same for me in terms of timescale as I was not planning on moving up to a bigger bike for at least a year anyway and probably more like 18 months. I would also have gone and done some lessons on a bigger bike before moving up anyway. So financially its not that different.

Why it has to be so complicated, fuck knows! If the DSA wants people to be safer they should just stipulate a rider has to do a certain amount of time training then let them do a single test (minus shit like walking the bike into a parking space) on any capacity bike. Nice and simple.
