Right whilst riding my r125cc ive been hearing a constant beeping sound.
So today i decided to head down to a yamaha dealership. I gave the keys to a young Jamaican mechanic working there. After about 8 minutes he came back and told me that the beeping sound was due to my speedo, he then offered to rectify my problem for a price then i said no as the problem was not really a mechanical one more of an irritation which i can live with.

So then he said that my steering bearings were knackered and i needed them replaced sharpish.
I was pretty shocked after he said this as i can steer from left to rift smoothly. Also my bike has only been on the road for around 350miles since i binned it, you should note that i did not buy knackered parts as they looked pretty new and were all inspected/ installed by a mechanic. I personally rolled each ball within the bearing to check for any bumps marks and found nothing. [Parts = the entire front end I.E forks, radiator and yoke etc]

He then told me that its pretty dangerous to be riding my bike as my bars could lock whilst im turning into a corner. He then made me weigh up my option die or get my bike fixed. Yeah also the he quoted me around £150 to solve the so called 'problem'.

sz if you read this on another forum...

It could cause the steering to be a bit sticky if they are knackered.

get the front wheel up and make sure the steering turns without any rough or notchyness.

Taper roller bearings are the way to go IMO, they need less adjustment, last longer and are pretty easy to fit.

Not done them on an R125, but they took me about 2 hours on a TZR125.

You'll have very noticeable notchyness on shot bearings. Odds are on that yours are just a bit too tight. Anyway, if you can't feel it yourself then stop worrying, it's not like they are going to jamb up sudddenly or anything.

So you took it in with an electronic fault - your speedo and declined his offer of repair and then suddenly you've got dangerously shot steering head bearings?

I smell male bovine excrement and an opportunist mechanic.

It's easy to check the bearings yourself - just get the front end off the ground and turn the forks from side to side - you're checking for any 'notchiness' - they should rotate freely smoothly without being excessively loose. Thumbs Up

If the mechanic was Jamaican then I reckon that you should seriously heed his warning. He will know what he's talking about when it comes to stuff jammin'

I never knew you could just test it by holding the front wheel up... the mechanic certainly did not do this as he just rode it up and down the high street back on forth a couple of times.

'Pay or die' sounds like a pressure tactic to me if ever there was one (considering the circumstances you describe). Try taking your bike elsewhere, complaining of the beeping only as see what they say.

He's not likely to have been testing the bearings lock to lock then. Laughing

You're answering your own question if you think about it. Wink
