alright, so my partner wants to get a car. but the insurance would be off the scale.

is it legal to do get a car, put it in my name, i take out an insurance policy and add his as a named driver?

he'd have his full licence (only just) and i'd have my full motorcycle license.

what would be the complications of doing this?

He would be considered the main (only ) driver as you don't have a licence, therefore they'd rate the policy on him rather than you anyway and, therefore, it shouldn't be any cheaper.

A few years ago fronting used to make your insurance well cheap, i did it till i was 21.

But they seemed to have cottoned onto it now and doesnt make alot of difference.

makes a huge difference for me. i've been looking at cars for my 17 year old brother.

for him to insure a mk2 polo on his own, it was over £4900.

As its been said, its 'fronting' which is illegal, and easy to find out at the roadside.

Not only could his insurance be cancelled (then has to declare that he has had insurance cancelled, putting future premiums up), but you and your partner could end up in court on fraud charges (I guess it would be fraud, but not 100% sure, maybe wrong).

Plus, he won't be getting his own no claims bonus (although some allow named drivers to get them), so won't get the benefits of no claims bonus.

Have you tried looking at getting quotes with parents/older brothers/sisters as named drivers? Putting my parents on saves me £300 a year, despite the fact they'll never drive it.

Claiming to be the main driver when you are not is fronting, which is illegal, and people have even gone to prison for it.

However if you "own" the car, but he is the main driver, it may bring down the costs a bit.

Another way would just be to add any older drivers onto the policy as named drivers.


I saved over 40% by adding both parents and an aunty as named drivers when I was 19/20/21/22. Now though adding one parent gets the maximum discount, any more doesn't save any money.

flatbadger, i know right!! and thats with me, an older named driver on it. which i figure makes it cheaper, as me and the mrs naming eachother on our insurance makes it cheaper for us, and we're not even older than eachother. best part of 5 grand for a £300 classic car.

The whole fronting thing would be doubly dodgy in your circumstances, as in the event of a claim the insurer might ask for all paperwork, including your licence (as the 'main driver'). If you then can't produce one, they're going to conclude that a) you've been driving without a licence, breaking the terms of your insurance as well as the law, and/or b) that you're fronting. A few insurers ask for a photocopy of your licence anyway (Adrian Flux did when I had insurance with them a couple of years ago).

Therefore it's probably not a very wise thing to do.
