But not for me, just dropped the Missus off at Advantage Wimbledon! She had the free get-on lesson last week and really enjoyed it.

5 weeks ago, that was me. Since then I've bought a bike, done theory, mod1 and failed mod 2. And just about to clock 1K on my new bike (30 mile commute each day).

Mental!

She was a little nervous

Ironically, on the way back, the car started playing up. Vauxhall Signum 3.0V6 Diesel. Known problem for these to get gummed up after the fuel filter (a little pointless if crap gets past the fuel filter). The fix, shot of Motorcycle 2 Stroke Oil in the filter housing. Runs like a peach again.

At least the weather is nicer than yesterday, drying up nicely. I think I experienced every bike-in-the-rain nightmare yesterday. Still managed to stay upright.

Rear-end wiggle, slippy manhole covers (the ones I didn't manage to avoid). Braking in a straight line and the front wheel locking (went over a white line), fortunately driving a car taught me all I needed to do was ease off a little on the brake then a little bit of rear brake to help me stop. A nice wet crotch when I discovered there is one area that apparently no textile trousers can expel water from. However, everything else was bone dry.

I usually have a pair of 'binmen' trousers to go over the top of my textiles, had to take stuff out of my topbox yesterday for a run into London. Including my cover so the bike was wet when I got to it anyway.

It was always going to be a fail!

She passed!

Two people didn't get through to on-road, which apparently is fair as one of them stacked it into a wall, TWICE!

She's just been out for a quick ride on my bike as I insured it for her when I got it, as she had expressed an interest. It's going to be wet again tomorrow so wanted to get a quick dry ride in.

She is very happy, but VERY tired.

I am surprised the instructor didn't end the crashee's CBT after the first wall encounter, mine would have done.

Not necessarily; depends, and whether the student WANTS to get back on after, and the bikes in any shape to be got on!

CBT is only basic training, it's anticipated some are going to have the odd tumble... why its done on the play-ground, so this stuff happens in a controlled enviroment, not on the road.

Had a girl on CBT many years ago; turned up with her boy-freind who was repeating. He had a old 125 sports-bike he'd pulled out of some-one's shed and 'fixed up', she had chosen a brand new Derbi, I think it was..... 50cc 'sports'.... with the notion that a smaller engine would make it easier to handle, but mainly becouse it had electric start!

It was NOT good from the start! The bike was hoplessly impractical for a CBT, with almost no steering lock and an engine that had to be buzzed to the red line to launch.. especially as she wasn't exactly a 'slender' young lady!

Anyway, she was almost in tears of frustration in the early practical excersises; she just couldn't get the bike to launch and not stall, slow riding was just NOT happening & cones?!?!?

We really didn't think she'd be going out on teh road after lunch, BUT... I spent some extra time with her 1on1, and cheated a bit.... moving excersises around, and 'kidding' her, moving teh cones apart to mke stuff easy then bringing them in closer as she got the idea, that kind of thing..... and as the first group were going out on the road, and most were going for the lunch break, had an instructor huddle to discuss whether we'd ask IF she wanted to go out........... It was while we were in the hut we heard the explosion of fibre-glass!

She'd been left to 'practice' and had grabbed her boy freind to show him how she was doing....... and rode straight into the ruddy wall! Brand new faring clad Derbi..... VERY second hand all of a sudden!

She was all set to quit; instructors were all set to let her, but I asked her to 'JUST' give me ONE lap round teh play-ground before she went home, becouse up to that point she had been doing good, and IF she quit with that as her last memory, I told her she probably wouldn't come back.... so give me ONE lap, to show she CAN get back in the saddle IF she wants to....

She did, and then did another, then stopped..... and asked if she could 'just' do some of the play-ground excersises for the rest of the after noon....

Coming on, in that session, she was relieved, confidence a bit back, and glad she'd got back on, but a bit dissapointed she wasn't going to complete......

Quick instructor huddle, and, she had had a bad off, she'd struggled all day, and it was getting late...... let her come back next week was the consensus.... BUT played advocate and pleaded her case, and we did a play-ground check, and she was just about up to grade, and we had JUST enough time to take her on the road.......

Took her out, and on the road, started coning together for her, the bike suddenly making more sense, especially on unclassified country roads, and the grimace became a grin...... and instructor who took her out for road training, not knowing her play-ground record was happy to sign her off at the end.

One VERY happy lady.....

Its Training...... falls happen..... yes, bigger ones would usually result in a refusal, but not ALWAYS, it is a lot down to the student and the instructor and the patience & tolerance of both!

Additionally, I should point out, that the girl wasn't that happy anyway. Apparently she was a bit scared of the noise the bike made too!

The difference is, this school did at least try, the one I went to, weren't interested. If they looked crap, then no further effort was made. As I've said before, the one girl who crashed into a tree whilst I was there (a bus driver of 20 years BTW), didn't look happy after that. Whereas the other that was refused just needed a bit of a nudge as she was riding around everywhere at idle. She just needed a bit more of a prod as she was riding well, just wouldn't open the throttle.

I guess that's the difference between a £90 CBT and a £130 CBT?
