I should think for 125's on that budget it'd be the standard NSR125 or RS125 to be honest.
Alternatively, someone is bound to recommend a 4 stroke as a stop gap for £500 or so (CG125/ GS125/ SR125), costing £300 or so to insure probably, saving the rest for a bigger bike once you've done the test. ____________________ I must not be a troll...

Yes, the NSR, RS are 2 strokes, derestricted people reckon on 100mph out of them, and they are beneath the 33bhp limit destricted too. (25-27 bhp or something like that)
There should be tonnes more people offering advice on this, this site was (is) a NSR125 site afterall.
Edit: actually the RS125 is supposed to produce 34bhp, which is as good as under the limit really. ____________________ I must not be a troll...

RS125 is definately a 2 stroke and I'm 99.9% sure the NSR is. When I bought the RS a guy in the place where I got it from said it'd do 120 but from reading the numerous 'what speed will my RS125 do?' posts on here that seems unlikely Probably expect about 100 max from both. What about considering a 250cc as well? (although myself I'd go for the RS as they are nice, and I'm biased cos I've got one )
Cheers

It's a reasonably highly tuned four stroke, producing 70-75 mph tops. I think it comes in for a fair bit of stick on this forum. And they're expensive for what they are too imo (£2500 new, and not a lot of older ones around as they've only just been introduced.)
Personally (assuming I didn't just do the test and move on up), I would plump for the RS125, though like you say, the insurance will be a bitch. It will be for any 2 stroke for a young rider though. ____________________ I must not be a troll...

The CBR125, like all bikes, has its advantages.
Cheap to run i.e. insurance, petrol, maintenance etc
But IMO, its overpriced, underpowered and quite a nasty bike to look at. If your looking for something which will happily chug along for 150 miles, the CBR should do it quite nicely. I believe they do anything around 85mph indicated but more like 80mph at a push.
With that sort of money, you'll be able to get anything you want.
I'll be bias now, get an RS125, you know you want to! ____________________ Aprilia RSV Mille R Edwards Replica - Aprilia RS250 - Suzuki GSXR600 Supersport Race Bike |

Why was this?
Insurance can be similar on the 500. They can be bought for a similar price, they may not look as pretty, but they will go better and be a nicer bike to ride on the motorway. Go for one with a fairing if possible.
Running a 125 will be more expensive; they are at a relatively high state of tune. If you say an NSR125 makes 25hp, that's 200hp a litre. A few years ago a F1 car only made a bit more than that!
The 500 will be about half that, so will generally be cheaper to run. You also don't need to get 2 stroke oil.
If you decide you really want a 125, pesonally I would go for a 94 or later model NSR. These can be got from around £1000 or so, will get up to an indicated 100mph, or a bit more if you're thinner than me probably .
The CBR 125 will struggle to get past 70, so really isn't reccomended for motorways use.
Note that if you go for an older bike, insurance will be much cheaper.... Third party only insurance on a ten year old NSR, swapped it to a under a year old NSR and they wanted double my original premium on top... hassled them and they got it down to just what I initially paid. This was for exactly the same bike as far as they were concerned.

As has been mentioned before, there's loads of people on here that would be happy to help... probably whether or not you are a slim young lady .
Also, if you look around there's plenty of guides on which bits to look at. Think andy(nsr) did one and I've been meaning to do a checklist style thing as I seem to buy too many bikes .
At the prices I'd reccomend you look at, even if you do get a dog, you still won't lose much money if you decide you want to sell it. Ride it for a bit, see what you think, and you've probably lost less money than the moment you push your new bike out of the shop . |

I've got a GT125 and I reckon its brilliant,it goes quite well for a 4 stroke 125 and it really looks the part too and is a real head turner...if you get one ride past a group of bikers and you'll see what I mean! It is such a large bike that no one will believe its only a 125.
I've had mine about 6 months now and its done just over 3500kms and I've not had any real problems with it,the rear brake light switch needed adjustment as the brake light was on all the time which was an easy fix and it seemed to have a bit of a flatspot when accelerating away from a roundabout or turn but I think that maybe just the way the carbs are setup for emissions laws etc, they don't seem to like cheapy supermarket petrol, use a brand name like BP or Shell and it runs much better but I think thats the same for most bikes to be honest.
There are 3 of us here that I know of that has one and as far as I'm aware theres been no major problems as yet,the bike seems to be very well made and the V twin engine is just excellent and sounds lovely too,the rest of the bike is just as good and the best thing I reckon is the brakes, the nice big discs all round give great stopping power which comes in handy if you're a bit of a novice rider! Its lovely to ride too and handles very nicely.
Parts and service etc shouldn't be a problem providing you've got a dealer nearby, check out the main importers site and see if you are close to one.

Also have a look at this thread for a few pics and other comments about the bike...you'll even see a pic of mine...wooo!

Cheers Ste!
Ade, Good to hear that they are reliable, I've got a dealer within driving distance! Thats good news! Insurance should be pretty good too if I get to 1yr NCB! £337 a year...
I think this might be the one to go for! ____________________ "Just Believe" |

A wise decision
As for insurance I had a cheapy chinese copy of a CG125 before I got my Comet and that was actually dearer to insure than the Hyosung which considering it was almost £900 cheaper list price is quite unbelievable to be honest,I didn't complain though |
