Eh, no. Really, no. Post office, £16, job done. You'll make it back when you sell the bike. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

New tax disc came in the post for the car in Februaryl...... put it on the shelf to put in the window when I had a mo......
Month or so later, my mother visited, put her keys down and when she went to pick them up spotted the tax disc and made big fuss about me putting it in the car there and then....
MOTHERS!
Anyway, after putting it in.... I looked, and it DIDN'T look right..... but couldn't quite fathom what was wrong.... anyway, mother was happy.
Month LATER mother turns up again, same thing , finds tax disc on shelf, makes song and dance about it! "But you WATCHED me put it in!" I said....
We went out, and that 'Thing' that was 'wrong' with the tax disc suddenlty became apparent...... it said 04-2012....
Well, BEING 2012, that seems right, doesn't it? But nope, years tax fitted in 2012 should say 2013!
Been driving around ALL YEARF without displaying LAST years tax disc!
Anyway.... yes, there are two offences:-
- Using or Allowing to be a used a vehicle for which no tax is in force
- Failing to display valid tax disc.
Since their integrated DVLA data-base giving police access, they aren't so bothered to check the actual disc on the vehicle, they call it up on thier in car computer when they check its insured etc.
Failure to display is the preserve of clampers and parking wardens, and they do seem to have purges on this still; there was a bit of a foraur around here a while back when a clamping contractor for DVLA came round and clamped loads of untaxed cars in residential communal parking areas!?!?
DISPLAYING is a requirement of teh Road-Traffic act though, and an examiner COULD legitimately refuse test for missing disc, same as if he doesn't like the look of your tyres, or the ball is missing off the end of your brake lever.......
So before test, save risk of losing fee and slot, worth giving it a going over as if sending it for an MOT, make sure t's crossed, i's dotted etc.
Tax discs can be bought over the counter at post offices (if you can find one in your county these days!), instantly, you don't have to wait for them to come through the post.
There used to be a caveat for applying for tax disc by post, and if you tax 'on-line' there are instructions for you to print the receipt number and display that... and its legitimate substitute and proof that vehicle is taxed.
TIP: if you are worried M/C tax disc may get nicked....... tax on-line, print & display the receipt number, 'forget' to fit actual tax disc when it comes....... ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

i like the german system where it's applied via the registration plate. (i think that's how theirs works) seems safer. ____________________ CBT - 17/09/12 * Theory - 23/10/12 * Mod1 - 05/03/13 * Mod2 - 25/03/13 * BOSH!

You're expecting reasonable behaviour from a copper who's already taken an interest in your vehicle? Best of luck with that.

Beats me. So what if it gets nicked? You're no worse off than you were keeping it in a drawer. Either way, DVLA know it's taxed, either way you're committing the (risible) offence of not displaying. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Slight twist on previous post:
Tax online, fit the disc when it arrives and IF it gets nicked display the online booking confirmation. ____________________ 22PlusY

I got turned away from a Mod 2 for having a week old tax disc on my bike (Though the bike was taxed I just didn't have the new disc). ____________________ "Calamity - A more than commonly plain & unmistakable reminder that the affairs of this life are not of our own ordering."
