As title says, she is a real pain to start when hot, almost like its flooding.
It has its occasional fire but not anough to start and then eventualy will start up.
It will do it if i turn it off and try try to start it fairly quick afterwards, say about a minute or so.
its perfectly fine when cold, starts in mornings no problem.

cant say when plugs or air filter was last changed as i havnt had it a month yet and just havent even had the time to take the tank off yet but any suggestion on what to check as il have to spare time with weekend

zx6r f3 1997

cheers

Next time that the engine is hot, perform a compression test.If all cylinders are reading a low result then check that the valve clearances are within spec.If they are below the specified clearance, once the engine is hot the valves can be open slightly, losing compression and causing the difficulty in starting.

If you have a multimeter then check that the spark plug caps are between 5-10k ohms.If any are way above 10k ohms then the internal resistive element might be breaking down causing insufficient power to get through to the spark plugs.

Could also be a fuel starvation or evaporation problem, rather than flooding. If you have time to do so, might be worth taking a couple of plugs out when the engine is hot and is being a pig to start, then checking what colour the plugs are.

If it's flooding, chances are they'll be wet. If they're not, it's unlikely to be a flooding problem. Ideally the plugs should be something around the colour of a rich-tea biscuit.

As other poster has mentioned, valve clearances could be too tight - I take it you've not had the bike long? Doubt it's an air filter problem otherwise it would be difficult to start hot and cold.

It may also be part of the ignition system is partially breaking down when hot; these faults can often show up whereas they may not with a cold engine.

Best of luck, hope you get her sorted.

Rick

difficult starting can be knackered spark plugs.

You say its hasn't been serviced, so if I was you I would get it all the plugs replaced and the air filter, and an oil change if not already done

Don't start taking apart things.

I know exactly what the problem is..... Valve seat recession. The early ZX6R's suffered from this, so google it and you will find out what I mean.

I don't think there are any fixes but have a look before you start taking carbs off and things.
